jfc, how did I get this lucky?
This was going to be the post wherein I cackled wildly about finally, finally Getting Shit Done, only my gift went up at hds_beltane earlier today and it is phenomenal. I always want to apologize a lot to the poor soul who gets assigned to write for me, because my sign-up turns into more of an infodump/overshare every year, but oh my god, you guys, what a fabulous gift I got.
If I don't already know my writer, I'll be surprised, because No Other Superstar is like all my favourite HD things in one amazing story. Anon, if you're reading this, ILU SO MUCH, MY STORY IS FABULOUS AND I AM STILL FLAILING! Just, I am trying to sound reasonable here, because incoherent squee is not actually a rec, right? So then.
Why you should read this story (and smother my awesome Anon with love):
1) Because Harry is spectacular. Cynical about his fame, as he should be, and as well-adjusted as he can be, this is a Harry who knows himself and what he wants, and refuses to let that define him. He's lovely and funny and sharp and sweet, and he's honest with himself to the point of thinking through convenient answers. More, he's still obviously Harry, who makes bad choices sometimes and still gets a bit reckless with his own safety. He's so mature in this fic, and I adore that.
2) Because Draco is stunning. Oh, I love Harry's characterization so much, but it's Harry's POV, which makes the clarity of Draco's characterization even more fantastic. One of the things that jumps off the page about this Draco is his control, and how fundamental it is to him, but Anon works in all the subtleties of detail that make Draco come alive, especially in his reticence. This is a Draco who's still the complete prick I know and love, and who's done some growing up, too, and who knows his own priorities.
3) You know that fic about how Harry and Draco are Auror partners and someone has a crush and there are all these cute little misunderstandings until the drama of the big reveal? This is not that fic. This is the fic that fic wants to grow up to be. This is the NC-17 fic with the shag-or-die curse that starts with not-really-pining!Harry who knows he's in love and sexy-as-hell!Draco who's basically asexual. IKR? It's awesome.
My absolute favourite kind of crack is the kind that takes reasonable characters and keeps them recognizable through a batshit situation, with hot smut and/or meta snark along the way. My gift does all of the above, just ALL THE THINGS, and if you haven't read it already, you need to.
