There were four apples ripe on the apple tree. There were eighteen bright blue flowers. And there was one Coraline Carter humming Somebody to Love in one of the trees. Not the Queen song of course, oh no Coraline was in love- in love with Justin Bieber. He was just so dreamy. He had a beautiful voice and he was so handsome and talented. Coraline ( Read more... )

"Hey, kid," Joe answered, pretty much his default greeting for anyone under the age of twenty-five, then watched as Coraline got herself out of the tree, shaking his head the whole time. If he'd tried to drop out of a tree like that, he'd probably break all his fucking ribs or something.

"I'm good. Not the kinda good that ends up with me in trees, but good. You good?"

"Not a kid," Coraline automatically replied making a face at the word. It was almost as bad as Jake and now Sawyer calling her Cor. Cor. It wasn't even her name, it was a boy's name and definitely not her name at all. "That's because your old, if you were in a tree I'd worry about having to rescue you."

Coraline grinned cheekily at Joe before she beamed at the question. "I'm brilliant. Have you ever heard of someone called Justin Bieber? He's a musician. He writes really brilliant songs and he dances and he's just really, really... awesome."

"No," Joe answered slowly, afraid that this was going to turn into one of those days he'd never be able to forget, no matter how hard he tried. Especially if this Justin Bieber was the dorky looking thing whose face was on Coraline's shirt. And anyone who danced wasn't a fucking musician.

"Do I want to?" he asked carefully, knowing he probably had no choice.

"Well, you teach music right? So, yeah you should want to. So, you can tell everyone about him. He's really nice and he's got hair like this" Coraline said grinning as she brushed her hair infront of her face. Coraline bounced up and down on her toes as she shook her hair back into place. "I mean, he's much cooler than that band you know the one with the guy with the big lips. They're boring. And so uncool."

Joe was sure he would live to regret this. He was absolutely positive that this was a bad idea, but he didn't have anything pressing to do and Coraline seemed pretty excited about it, so he said, "Then are you gonna tell me stuff about him? Play me some music? Something?"

"Really? We could go to the Compound and watch his videos, he's made videos you know? They're really cool." Coraline said grinning. "I think I like Somebody to Love the best. It's got great lyrics. Like-" Coraline coughed before bursting into somewhat awful song. "For you I’d write a symphony. I’d tell the violin. It’s time to sink or swim.Watch him play for ya. I like the way he doesn't say you."

"Uh..." Joe wasn't sure what the fuck he was supposed to say to that. He'd written plenty of songs in his time and a lot of those were written under the influence, but they still made a hell of a lot more sense than whatever it was Coraline had just sung.

"Okay. I'm gonna regret this, aren't I?" He already knew he would.

"Probably. You like old people's music, don't you?" Coraline said cheekily, smiling at Joe. Coraline liked most of her teachers and former teachers even if she wasn't any good at their class and Coraline and music weren't exactly the best of matches. "Come on, once you've watched his videos you'll probably have Bieber Fever too. It's apparently a thing, I read about it in one of those music magazines."

Well, it was a Teen music magazine but it was still about music. Well, music and cute boys.

"Bieber Fever," Joe repeated skeptically. Any kind of music that had a fever or a mania that went along with it probably wasn't something he was much interested in. Because, as she said, he liked old people music. And he was just fine with that.

"What kinda music is it?" he asked, following her along the boardwalk.

"Um, pop music. He's very cheery," Coraline said with a bright smile as she half jogged and lurched along. Coraline was very tall and she ambled along quite quickly, all legs and arms as she went. "What sort of music do you like? My dad used to make songs up, to try and cheer me up but it just embarassed me."

"Punk rock," Joe answered, although there was lots of music he liked and it wasn't all punk. Somehow, though, he doubted Coraline's newest find would be along those lines. "Did your dad play an instrument?"

"What's punk rock?" Coraline asked curiously, as she turned around to look at Joe. She was still moving but backwards now. Coraline couldn't wait to show Joe, Justin maybe if he liked him then he'd play a Justin Bieber concert for her. That would be cool. "He played the piano. He used to make up awful, embarassing songs up about me."

"I play piano, too," Joe offered, although he was pretty sure that didn't exactly make it any more cool. "I bet he was just doing it 'cause he loved you."

He didn't know much about embarrassing parents, as his own had never really tried. They'd be absent and uncaring.

"Yeah but I bet you play cool piano, not awful embarassing piano." Coraline said making a face as she saw the Compound up ahead. "I guess so. My parents were... forgetful. It was really nice though when they remembered about me. He used to make up loads of stuff, he was a writer."

"Piano is pretty much all the same," he answered, although that wasn't entirely true. "What kinda stuff did your dad write?" he asked, pulling open the Compound door and heading inside.

"Stories. Really big ones. I never read them, they were too big and he used really big words that I could never spell." Coraline said. Coraline had loved bugging her father when he was working, cramped over a computer and looking more and more red-eyed and bearded as deadlines loomed. "They were for grown ups. He used to go to London on the train a lot to speak to people about them. And then it was just me and mum and our mad neighbours."
