The way back to Alice's England--this time, as it's always changing--is just around a tree. She's discovered she doesn't even need a doorway to get through. Just going around a landmark will suffice as a boundary between the two worlds. Leading John around the tree, she finds herself back on the riverbank.
It's a beautiful autumn day, and this is her favorite spot on the river: a shady little copse of trees just by the water's edge, hidden from view on either side by another bank of trees. The sun shines down through the leaves, dappling the brown and the surface of the water.
"Here's where I'm from," says Alice to John, nervously.
