There are only three events about this Shabbaton that are worth discussing... One of them, truly memorable, the other two, kinda interesting.
First of all, how Keren's car broke down on the side of HWY 400 an hour out of toronto, during rush hour traffic in a snowstorm... It stalled and wouldn't start again.
Luckily, a Good Samaritan named Bob Steward was the truck driver behind us. He got out, came up to our car, and pushed it off to the side of the road...Then he offered us a ride in his HUGE truck to the nearest service station (Which turned out to be a gas station)...We didn't hesistate to get in the car with him because he looked so sincere.
We then spent 2 hours of our lives in the corner of that gas station's magazine section, sipping on free coffee compliments of the attendants, waiting for CAA to get on the scene. It was absolutely freezing outside that night.
CAA's Jamacian representative finally came. Poor guy had to work outside on connecting Betty the Jeep to the tow truck in the absolutely horrifying cold. We got to sit in the warm truck while we waited..
As we wait, Carla and Catherine (also going to the retreat ) run into the gas station with frantic looks on their faces. It turns out they were driving up and saw Keren's very noticable car on the side of the road. They slowed down and saw that it was empty, and got very worried. They were coming into the gas station to call Keren..Its so nice to be two girls in this world of men!
Then, Laura and Prof. Pomson come by for coffee and find us there. It was a mini Jewish-Ed party in there.
The tow truck took us to Keren's mechanic. We were going to leave the car in the mechanic's parking lot and leave, but strangely enough on 8:30 pm on a Thursday night, the mechanic and his assitant were there. Cool Israeli guy named Igal. He immidiately asked us what we wanted on our pizza :)...
Keren's parents arrived there shortly, and Keren's mom gave us her car to get to the retreat. So at 9pm we set out on our way, again....
We got to the retreat at 11pm, pretty spooked by all the deserted country roads we had to take. It was dark and cold and spooky. And it was JUST like Texas Chainsaw Massacre. SCARRRRY.
Prof. Pomson was kind enough to leave aside a good amount of dinner for us. We were starving after about 7 hours of driving and the eggrolls , rice and stir fry chicken were sooooo good.
All in all, every step of the way, someone took care of us, and made the situation a bit easier.. There are kind people in this world, its true.
