A few questions..

Aug 22, 2007 22:58

My moms 50th birthday party is this weekend, and I plan on making a pull away cupcake cake, but how exactly do you do that?

Also, any tips or places on how to make/buy black frosting???

Thanks in advance!!!!

help: icing/frosting, black frosting, pull-apart cupcakes

I made black frosting with black food colouring I found in the supermarket. It was BLACK black, which was fantastic. I'm in New Zealand, so you probably have different brands there, but the brand I found was Queen, and it was in the baking section of the supermarket, in a bottle, rather than those little dripper-type colourings.

Good luck!

Otherwise, if there's time, maybe one of those online baking goods stores that seems to have everything you can think of, and 1000 products you couldn't think of?

I don't think I have enough time to have it mailed to me :(

What shape are you trying to achieve for the cake?

Most that I've seen done, they people arrange the cupcakes on a large cake board unfrosted in the shape they want. then with piping bags pipe over them all to the desired look.

As for black frosting. Americolor is a great icing color brand. try and find that or you could take chocolate frosting and tint it with black coloring to get the darkness you are after.

Hope this helps!

I was just looking to do a sheet cake but w/ cupcakes instead, I was just wondering how to frost it w/o there being gaps from the cupcakes not being close enough together..? haha

Thanks

Just make sure when you design the shape you want to create that you stagger the cupcakes before icing them, so that the smallest gaps appear between the cupcakes. (see diagram)

My mom picked up some black for me last week. I just checked the brand, and it's Spectrum, if that means anything to you. My mom bought at a cooking supply store, so if you know one, try there.

To get black, it helps to start with chocolate icing. Also, Americolor colors work a heckuva lot better than Wilton.
