A/N: I was re-reading xxxHolic today and reading 167 (in the DelRey version) of volume 4 a plot bunny began to gnaw insistantly at my brain. This is the result.

"What the hell's he staring at?"

"Hmm?" Fay walked over to where his lover was looking out of the window of their cafe. Wrapping an arm around his waist he saw the boy in a school uniform and glasses, staring in horror at their sign. "I bet it's something spooky."

Kurogane glanced at him, looking doubtful. "I don't see anything."

"You wouldn't. You don't see spirits; neither do I. He does."

"How do you know?"

"Yuuko-san told me. He works for her."

"That bitch," Kurogane murmured, giving his usual response to the Dimension Witch's name being mentioned. The boy was still staring at the cafe's sign. "So what do you think he sees?"

"Who can say?" Fay snuggled into the crook of Kurogane's shoulder. "But I don't think it's anything to really worry about. Yuuko-san will let us know if it is."

"Yeah; and then overcharge us for the privilege."

"You should be grateful to her, Kuro-sama."

Glancing down at his left arm, at the dragon tattoo that wound around it, Kurogane nodded slowly. "I suppose." He looked at the blond head before resting his cheek against the silky hair. "And what about you? Are you grateful to her?"

"Very," Fay smiled, gazing around his cafe. It was full of people enjoying themselves, eating and drinking goods he had made with his own two hands - no magic involved. "Without her, I wouldn't have this place." He smiled up at Kurogane. "And more importantly, I wouldn't be with you. Even though I love Cat's Eye, it wouldn't be home without you."

The other man allowed himself to smile a little at his blond lover.

"Excuse me!" One of the customers called and with a smile, Fay extricated himself from Kurogane and went to serve her. Turning back to look out of the window again, Kurogane saw the a frightened expression pass over the boy's features before he sped away from whatever it was he saw. His lips thinned. He saw enough material monsters when the sun went down - he didn't need to see immaterial ones as well; that wasn't to say they didn't exist. If there was a spirit here, he would make sure it was exorcised. This place meant the world to Fay, and Fay meant the world to him. Even if it meant going to Yuuko, he would make sure nothing bad happened here.

Walking over to the counter, as he prepared a pot of tea for a waiting customer he considered his situation. While this was not the home in which he had spent his childhood, nor was it the sort of place he had expected to live: but he was happy here. He had Fay, he had his work and he needed nothing else. This was home and he would protect it.
