Summary: They've won and Cobb is finally going home.
Cobb watches as Saito takes the phone out and punches in the numbers. There's a feeling of relief washing over him. He was right in trusting Saito. He's going home but more importantly, he's going to see Phillipa and James again. They're going to turn around and there'll be that bright gleam of recognition in their eyes before they come rushing into his arms. It'll be as if nothing's changed, like none of the past two years ever happened. Cobb can hear his heart pounding or maybe it's the sound of the engines.
He almost doesn't notice when Saito stands up, but he does notice the pitying look in Ariadne's eyes. "I'm sorry," she mouths at him, but Cobb doesn't understand. Everything's going to be all right. Everything's going to be fixed. There's such a sad look in her eyes, and she's biting her lip as though this is the hardest decision she's ever had to make, but Cobb still doesn't understand.
They've won. Inception wasn't just a once-off thing. He's managed to replicate it and Cobb knows that in a few weeks, he'll be reading about Fischer in the newspapers again. They planted the idea deep where it'll grow, but not deep enough that it would mutate into the cancer that ate Mal up from the inside.
"What..." Cobb begins, but stops. He isn't sure what wants to ask.
He begins to understand when Saito grabs hold of his arm. It feels like everything has been working towards this moment and that this is the moment he's been waiting two years for. As the world goes dark around Cobb, he feels nothing but the IV in his arm and hears nothing but the soft sound of Ariadne's voice.
"You're going home."
Cobb manages to smile. She almost sounds like Mal.
