Leek watches as everybody gives Abby a birthday present. Her eyes light up as Connor hands her a small wrapped gift. Even Lester takes time out of his day to place a wrapped box onto her desk. Leek tries not think about the fact that he chose that present for Abby when she wraps her arms around Lester and kisses him on the cheek. "It's perfect!" she exclaims when she opens the present. When Leek gives her his own gift, she simply gives him a brief smile and a lukewarm thank you.
Leek watches when it's Lester's birthday. The celebrations aren't as effusive as they are for Abby but even Cutter finds time out of his day to say a gruff, "Happy Birthday," to Lester as he walks past. He sees Connor sneak a small present into the office with a label on it that says: From Abby and Connor.
Leek watches when Jenny celebrates her birthday. Her desk is piled high with small wrapped presents. Leek picked out a sparkling necklace that perfectly matched her eyes, but the next day he sees her wearing the gaudy chain that Cutter picked out for her.
Leek watches when Connor's sick on his birthday. Abby phones the local bakery to get a cake delivered and the entire team chips in to take Connor out to dinner later that week. When he gets back to work, looking pale and wan, there's a huge pile of presents on his desk and a small cupcake with a candle on it.
Leek watches when it's Cutter's birthday. He sees Jenny start to walk towards his desk several times before stopping and running her fingers thorough her hair. She fingers the necklace she's been wearing since her own birthday. Lester stops by Cutter's desk in the afternoon and hands him a small wrapped box with a smirk. "I had no use for it," he tells Cutter. "I thought I'd give it back to you." Cutter simply rolls his eyes and there's a moment of camaraderie that Leek wishes he could be part of.
Leek doesn't expect anything much for his birthday. He knew he wasn't as much a part of the team as everybody else. He didn't expect presents or cake. All he wanted was a simple, "Happy birthday, Oliver."
He watches as everybody packs up. Abby gives him a small smile as she passes. "Bye."
"Bye," Leek echoes.
Lester stops by his desk and Leek can feel his hopes rise. He knows he mentioned his birthday to Lester last week. "Remember to get that paperwork done," Lester says, pointing towards a pile on Leek's desk.
Leek's heart sinks. "Yes, sir," he says and watches as everybody leaves.
