Title: Inevitable
Fandom: SGA
Rating: PG
Summary: Peter Kavanagh always knew it would come down to this.
Author notes: I think this would be an interesting idea to expand on. Maybe into a novel-length piece. If, y'know, anybody wants to read a story where Kavanagh's the main character.
I always knew it would come to this.
I just expected it sooner. The sheer unbridled arrogance of Weir was a ripe ground for anarchy. The calm righteousness of Carter seemed only the next step. Yet, under their control, Atlantis simply seethed with resentment but never broke free of Earth's calming restraint.
It seems laughable now, but I was glad when Woolsey became the leader of Atlantis. Here was finally a man who had Earth's best interests in mind. Here was finally a man who did not bow to Weir's legacy.
A rough hand pushes me forward.
"Doctor Peter Kavanagh," the voice behind me drones. "You have been charged with high crimes against the Independent State of Atlantis. You have attempted to hijack the Gate Room to contact the Milky Way Galaxy. You have..."
I tune out as the Leader reads out a litany of my misdeeds.
I always knew that we'd end up here.
It was obvious that with every month, every year we spent in Pegasus, that the loyalties of the mission were changing. You could see it in the faces of McKay, Sheppard, even Lorne whenever they were requested to go back to Earth. It wasn't a homecoming to them. It was entering a hostile galaxy that had nothing left for them.
When Woolsey was appointed, I had dared to hope that finally Earth was regaining control over this rogue expedition, but my hopes were in vain. News filtered back to me as I was on the Daedalus that Woolsey was breaking as many of his precious IOA rules as Weir did previously. I also heard disturbing reports that whispered of murder and innocent civilians.
I came back to Atlantis to see if I could talk to Woolsey. To see if I could talk some sense into him. But I never had the chance.
Atlantis declared herself independent less than a day after I arrived. I was too late.
"You have been found guilty of all charges."
I can't resist it. I turn my head and sneer. "Judge, jury and executioner, are we, John Sheppard?"
He looks at me impassively. "The death penalty is applicable for treason."
I brace myself. I know what words are coming and I hope that I'm ready for them.
