Fic: Skeletons - Adjustment.

Skeletons fic
For those of you unfamiliar with Skeletons, it's a story written by the great moon_maiden36 based off of the 'birthday OAV'
This story is almost entirely unrelated to FMA, in that most characters are OCs and canon characters are written in a post-movie AU of sorts.

This fic is set in modern time (2015-ish), telling the story of 'Ed's grandchildren' as depicted in the birthday OAV. This fic is often referred to as Elricestx2 because it includes both a relationship between Edward and Alphonse and, the grandchildren - Edward and Alex.

If Elricest is not of any interest to you, it is best that you avoid fics relating to Skeletons, as well.
However, if the concept sounds intriguing and you're unfamiliar with it, I suggest you check out the actual fic before reading mine. Which can be found, here.

It's well worth it, if you don't have a problem with OCs.

As for current fans- Enjoy.

This idea randomly came to me while baking a cake, a few weeks ago. No, it has nothing to do with cakes - though that would have been convenient considering the contest that had been going on at the time. This was actually my second Skeletons fic, written before the one posted for the birthday contest. I don't really know where this came from, but I wanted to write a Skeletons fic with this summary, so this is what I came up with.
Points to anyone that knows where the quote came from, without checking their DVDs. (Yes, it's in FMA.)

The tension still hadn't died down in the Elric household. Edward's goodbye played over and over in Alex's mind. His expression, the way he'd looked up at him, his voice - even the fight that had led up to his older sibling's eviction. Rosie had been furious, but even she'd cowered away from her father in that instant, clutching Al's hand beneath the table as they both watched in silent horror. Benjamin Elric was not the type of man to cross, they knew that, even if Rosie did tend to push his buttons. The blonde was pacing back and forth across her bedroom floor, bracelets jingling. She stopped, mid-stride and spun to face her older brother, appearing ready to speak - but nothing came out. The brunette already knew that she was sorry she'd rushed him off the phone with Edward so fast. That's why she had stayed in, even after checking her e-mail for invitation to leave, and asked Al to play a game of cards instead. He didn't really want to know what else she might have to say, and thanked his luck that she chose to remain silent - even if that silence was unnerving.

Alex was curled up on the floor of his sister's bedroom, cards in hand. They'd wanted something to take their minds off of the friction in their home. The card game idea, though appreciated, hadn't helped. Al knew it wouldn't, that he'd be thinking - worrying - about his brother, and Rosie hadn't even pretended to calm down. She was twice as riled for having to give up an evening out to be there for her brother, but Alex knew that she was also worried about him - and Ed. The blonde stood behind her own set of cards, left face down and fanned out on the rug as if she'd planned on continuing the game they hadn't even started. Periwinkle eyes were narrowed, one hip jutted out to the side, and the expression on her face made Alexander nervous. It was as if she was trying to determine just how to word the important thought on her mind.

He coughed, hunching his shoulders before pushing his own hand of cards away. "I think... I should go to bed." Al muttered weakly. To anyone else it was early - far too early to call it a night, but Alex couldn't wait for this day to be over. He couldn't see what kind of cards he had anyway, when he tried to focus on them all he saw was a pair of golden eyes. Despite every protest, his mind betrayed him. Alex knew that worrying about Edward would only make him sick in the end, and he cursed himself internally for it; after all he had promised Ed he'd try not to worry - still, his thoughts screamed of Ed! Ed! Ed! He felt like he didn't know when he'd see his older brother again, even though there was the obvious answer - tomorrow, at school. Rosie didn't seem to mind, her train of thought had left the game once the cards were dealt. Probably thinking about who she'd gotten e-mails from, Alex groused silently. He tried not to let the thought rise that Rosie usually had an uncommonly good hand, and her lack of interest on any normal day may have been suspicious. Alexander really only had one thing on his mind as he stood. How empty his room would be when he got there, how not even his mother would be there this time. How... Ed was gone. Really, entirely gone and he wasn't coming back. The younger boy wasn't certain he was willing to believe that, just yet.

Neither teen moved to pick up the cards - Alex stood up, and Rosie flopped unceremoniously into her computer chair. She'd forfeited any social get-togethers for the evening to keep Al company, after forcing him off of her phone with Edward. Now, as Alex headed off to bed, the blonde decided to see if there was still a chance to get out for a few hours. She'd need it after this day from Hell.

Alex collapsed onto his bed with a faint 'hmph.' He picked up Bunny and held the kangaroo to his chest, inhaling deeply. Edward may have been gone, but Al could still feel his presence in small subtle ways. He climbed to the top bunk without even thinking about it, clutching the sheets in his free hand and pressing his face to Edward's pillow. The scent was so familiar, so Ed- and in this proximity, his brother should have been nearby. His body seemed to realize this, shivering from the lack of extra body heat that came with Edward's arms wrapped around him. It almost seemed like a breeze had come through the room, but Al knew that the window was closed, from earlier. Alexander practically hurled himself over the side of the bunk bed, reaching for his pillow on the lower bunk.

"No good..." He muttered, easing himself lower and lower until rolling over the side completely and crashing against the mattress. Alex gathered his blanket and pillow without a thought, ascending to his new bed once more. There, the brunette burrowed under the covers, wrapping his own blanket over him once he was buried under Ed's, to provide added warmth. He wrapped his arms around his own pillow, burying his face against the one that had belonged to his brother. He was warm, comfortable and best of all - he could still smell Ed. Even if he couldn't be with his brother, he still had this small assurance to fall back on.

Alexander jolted with the realization that he'd left Grandpa Elric's journal on the bed below him. Which lead to another reminder. Dad - naming Edward after his father. He had to tell his brother - but that would need to wait. He would see Ed tomorrow at school; for now, Alex just wanted to close his eyes. He'd rested nearly the entire day, but it still felt as if this one day had been the longest of his life. With sleep, and surrounded by everything Ed - including the faint smell of smoke - the nightmare would soon be over.  With the thought, 'I should sleep up here more often,' Alex focused his attention on Edward. His eyes, his smile, everything about him. Alexander breathed deeply, willing back the growing lump in his throat - as far as he was concerned, sleep couldn't come soon enough.

It's not very good. I wasn't really going for much, just a quick story to match that summary - which sort of became an explanation as to why Alex sleeps in the top bunk, now. Aside from, you know, the general teenage need to sleep on the higher bed.
