V for Vague

I just finished reading "V for Vendetta"

First impressions: The movie was better

Before the fanboys just down my throat let me explain. Also SPOILER ALERT!!

1) I like the "V" in the movie better. V is supposed to be a little insane, but at least in the movie he's understandable insane. Everything he says is in coherent sentences and while he quotes, he doesn't do it to the degree he does it in the book. In the book I couldn't understand what V was saying half of the time and it just gets boring. Frankly I think the movie took the good parts of V's character and just focused on that. Also some of his most memorable quotes ("And ideas are bulletproof" for example) aren't as good in the book. In the movie V kills about 8 guys and then strangles one of the main party members while saying that line. That is awesome. In the book he lets himself get shot only to wound the police officer. Wtf? At least in the movie he lets himself get shot in order to get them to empty their guns.

Honestly, The only character that was identical in both the movie and the book was the female Doctor who worked at Lark Hill. I will admit that whole segment what a bit better in the book. But that's it.

2) There were so many characters it was impossible to keep up. Alot of the male characters were drawn so similar I couldn't tell one from the other. Similar with "V", half the time I didn't know who was talking to who. Also the accent in the writing made reading what they were trying to say impossible.

3) The Leader was too sympathetic a character. In the movie he's an evil SOB who wants power. That's someone everyone can agree that V should fight. In the book he's this lost guy who loves his computer waaaaay too much. He doesn't even realize his government is forcing people to look like they support him. He's a figurehead. How can someone like that be a villain? Now I am all for multi-layered characters. The operative in "Serenity" for example. Now there was a villain who was 3-dimensional and one could understand, sympathize with, and hate and fear at the same time. The Leader in the book is a joke.

4) The book was TOO LONG! For heaven's sake! Really the movie took the important parts of the story and just focused on that. That kept a good pace so the movie didn't drag. The book goes on and on and on!

I could probably think of more things wrong with the book, but I was just offered good desert, so I will end this entry here.
