okay. okay. okay. okay. okay. okay, okay? okay.
listen. listen to me. listen. listen. listen to me, okay? okay. okay. okay.
This is the first paragraph of the email I got from my brother. I was amused, but also befuddled. He's so much more intelligent than I am.
"Nolan,
What's good? That's a pretty philosophical greeting, though I doubt that most people take it that way. After all, the question of the good -- what constitutes good behavior, good standards, etcetera -- is about as big-ticket as, say, the existence of God. Again, if you compared the existence of God to a determination of the actual good, I posit that most people would want the answer vis a vis God, though my contention is that you can circumvent asking about God by establishing the objective good -- because God's existence doesn't denote his goodliness, and if God doesn't exist then you're no closer to the good. If the good is revealed to be "follow God's will in X translation of the Bible," well, you have taken two birds (colossal birds) with a single shot; if it is revealed to be a different morality apart from God, you at least know that your conduct is objectively permissible and that you aren't going to be found wanti! ng in any kind of possible afterlife. Of course, the afterlife looks like one big fairytale, but I don't know."
Re-goddamn-diculous.
