Kids & Crohn's followup

Thanks for all of the really great comments to my last post. They've both helped reassure me, correct my percentage stats, make me look for further research online, and generally not come to a decision but to be more informed about making that decision later ;) Mostly it's helped me reassess where my feelings were coming from, and why. I knew I had ( Read more... )

I had read your initial post and found it interesting because I have crohns and I used to worry if I had kids, about passing it on. And now I have an ileostomy, which I'm fine with, but now I'm thinking that having kids would involve a bit of hassle with an expanding abdomen and getting fixed up for better fitting bags and then I read things about how organs shift after the intestine comes out and I wonder exactly where would this potential kid be found inside me?! How would I get it out?! Heh. After thoughts like that, I'm just really happy with my three dogs ( ... )

Thanks :) Blimey, that must have been an interesting one to figure out. Is there much data on how having an ileostomy affects pregnancy? Don't blame you on going for the dogs - I've got a cat, reptile and aquarium with plans for a dog (and maybe a parrot) very soon - my growing urge to nuture has found other outlets so far :)

Thanks both :) It has been a great reminder of how great LJ can be too, and how there's a place for it alongside facebook and twitter :)

I have to ask: after your terrible doctor and lack of care received, how did you eventually manage to get diagnosed and get some medical help?

It was a holiday to Cyprus, when I was at my sickest. I tried to scuba dive and loved it, but got cramp and had to stop. I parasailed and loved it, but was so light the parachute wouldn't drop and they had to winch me in! I excitedly ordered my favourite dinner in nice restaurants, and even though I was relatively happy I still couldn't eat - I chucked up my birthday dinner after three bites then watched as dad ate it… and spent most of the holiday on the loo. I then chucked up every following meal. Because I wasn't hiding away in my room and avoiding my parents I think they could see how unhappy I was, and how I really wanted to be better - so it wasn't me making it up and it gave my opinion that the doctor was useless more weight. When we got home we went to get a second opinion, in a much better hospital 3 hours drive away. I was diagnosed 2 days after meeting the doctor, just one more barium meal.

You're in the UK, yeah? How was your diagnosis?

Wow . . . What an unimaginable amount of bullshit you went through in getting diagnosed. Mine wasn't bad at all, excepting my pediatrician, who insisted that I had "anorexic tendencies."
