A/N : Hi, it's me again with another fic, I'm pretty productive lately, don't you think so?
This one was inspired by the original soundtracks of one of my favorite anime, Samurai X.
There are three songs on the tracks that I love the most: One Half, Sobakazu, and It's Gonna Rain. So I decided to make Yongseo fics based on those songs' lyrics.
I chose the main title Summer Scent because I was writing in my hot bed room accompanied by a lousy fan blowing the wind to my face (I live in a tropical country), and the main female character in Samurai X is named Kaoru, which means 'fragrance'.
So, Happy reading!!
1. One-Half
They were on their way home from school and the next day would be the start of their summer holiday. Seohyun sat on the back of the bike and draped her left hand around Yonghwa’s waist tightly while he was pedaling fast forward like the wind. She hid her face behind his back because the sun was blinding her vision. She then put her left ear on his back, trying to listen to his heartbeat, but all she could hear was the sound of the pedal rotating and the summer bugs screeching. It made her wondered, was it really him who rode the bike? Was it real?
Seohyun blinked and looked away at the field of sunflowers on the river bank across her. The river beautifully reflected the same color of the sky. Yellow and orange. Before Seohyun could actually enjoy the scene, they had already passed it. Her view suddenly replaced by buildings of stores, a bus stop, electric poles and cables, and people. A lot of people. And somehow it made her sad.
“Hyun,” she heard him shouted from up front so she tilted her head to look at him.
“Let’s buy patbingsoo,” he said, his fringe flew messily covering his forehead, but she could see clearly how his eyes dilated with joy and his toothy grin made an appearance, “My treat!” he added.
Seohyun smiled and nodded.
They stopped in front of a bakery shop. Seohyun looked around while Yonghwa parked and locked his bike. The chimes jingling when they entered the bakery shop and a waiter welcomed their arrival from the cashier counter. The shop was empty and quiet with only the sound of three fans hanging on the wall, cooling the humid room.
Seohyun chose one of the seats next to the glass window, facing the street. Yonghwa sat in front of her after ordering a big glass of patbingsoo to share with her. Seohyun looked out the window and watched people doing whatever they were doing and noticed that there were too many people for a small town like Jeonju. And she could guess that there would be more people in a place as big as Seattle. Yonghwa would meet a lot of people in Seattle.
And I will be forgotten.
Like a beautiful view of the river and a field of sunflowers she passed earlier, she, too, would be replaced by other views.
And I will be forgotten.
Seohyun broke her reverie when she sensed the waiter coming to their table bringing the patbingsoo they ordered, and she caught him staring at her, a smile plastered on his face. But not the smile she used to see from Jung Yonghwa. It was a sad smile. So she smiled back at him cheerfully, a little too cheerful, as if saying ‘It’s okay’ and reached out to take a spoonful and shoved it to his mouth playfully.
They ate the patbingsoo while talking, about school, their friends, the summer festival their school held, and suddenly he looked outside the window while saying “I think I’m so unlucky”.
“Why?” she asked, curious.
“I’ve been waiting for two years to take you to the summer festival, and when I think I can finally take you around, -“ he didn’t finish his words.
“It’s okay,” she replied, smiling when he looked at her.
“It’s okay,” she repeated to convince him, and herself.
Then Yonghwa suddenly stood up and bent down, his torso crossing the table, the hem of his uniform dipped into the melting patbingsoo, but he didn’t seem to care. Because his lips were on hers, his hand was on hers, and his heart was on hers.
It was just a chaste kiss and he broke away immediately. Their first kiss.
But he stayed on his position for a long while, forehead to forehead, eyes to eyes, nose to nose.
The sun was setting and the sky was getting darker, and when she felt his breath on her face, Seohyun came to realize that he was her other half.
He was all that she was for fifteen years she lived on earth.
He was the one who took her to school every day ever since she knew school. He was the one who piggybacked her home when they raced on bike and she fell hard on the ground, bruised and crying. And when Seohyun refused to ride a bike again out of fear, he installed a lift on his bike for her. He was the one who clapped so hard during her ballet recital when she was 7 and made her blush for the first time, though she didn’t really understand back then. He was the one who taught her how to play guitar, how to play pool, and snowboarding. They made kimchi together, played at the amusement park in Seoul together, planted and harvested sweet potatoes in her back yard together.
But he would be gone.
Her other half was leaving.
And she knew, since then, she would never be complete anymore.
2. Sobakazu (Freckles)
Seohyun watched as her friends ran excitedly to the beach right after they got off the car. Seohyun smiled as the sea breeze blew her hair and the vast sea was laid in front of her.
She couldn’t help but marveled at the sight in front of her. The blue sea, the vast sky, the chasing tides, the white sand. Her friends played around, laughing and screaming.
“Can you smell it?” Jinwoon, the driver of the group asked as he closed his eyes and took a deep breath, “the smell of the sea,” he added.
Seohyun followed along, she closed her eyes and inhaled deeply.
“Hmm,” she muttered as the scent of sun mixed with salt and sand sipped into her nose. The next thing she knew was her hands were in his. Seohyun looked back at Jinwoon with wide eyes, surprised by the sudden gesture. But the guy just smiled at her.
“Let’s go?” it was a question, he was asking for a permission.
Seohyun smiled and nodded.
Hand in hand, they ran towards the crowd near the sea, their exciting college mates.
Seohyun laughed out loud while avoiding the splashing tides coming toward her. She let her skirt wet and her skin burnt by the sun.
As the salty sea water that was splashed on her face by her friends reached her tongue, a flash of vision, a freckle, ran into her head. She stopped on her track.
Salty kimchi.
A stain on the wall.
A crooked smile.
Brown hair. Ducks. Guitar. Snow.
Sunflowers. Patbingsoo. A kiss.
She smiled. She smiled at the things she had forgotten, the things she thought she had forgotten, and at the things she just remembered.
She smiled at the memory of him.
It was kind of funny and sad how she could only remember the chorus part of the song he wrote for her, how she forgot the color of his bike, and she wondered how the sound of his laughter was.
And she felt guilty for forgetting.
But what about him? She asked. What he remembers the most about me? And what does he forget?
Another wave splashed on her feet, brought her back to the sea, and Jinwoon pulled her hand, made her run to the deeper part of the sea with him. She screamed as the water reached her waist. Jinwoon laughed at her, his eyes turned crescent.
Seohyun looked at the smiling guy holding her hands, and she sighed in realization.
Yes, this is my life now, she thought, as she returned the smile.
He might lead a different life, just like her. He might be holding a girl’s hand and running around the beach, just like her. He might be happy, just like her. He might have moved on.
Then she thought that it was okay to forget, because he might also forget her birthday, or he might not remember the color of her eyes, or he wouldn’t recognize her if they met on the street.
He might also only have freckles of memories about her.
And maybe one day, it would eventually fade away.
3. It’s Gonna Rain!
Seohyun was getting worried. She had been sitting on that table for 2 hours and 33 minutes. She had finished 2 cups of green tea latte, and she just ordered another one. She was skipping from work for the first time, benefiting from her boss’ appointment with a client outside, though she was sure, her boss would comeback in any minute then. And if he found her nowhere inside, she would be in trouble.
The thunder kept shouting and yelling in the sky. The lightning stroke, it warned people outside to return to their safe and warm home, or to immediately find a shelter. It was going to rain. A heavy one. If she didn’t walk out from the café right that moment to go back to her office, she would’ve had to stay for much longer, because she didn’t bring her umbrella with her. Who would bring an umbrella for 30 minutes lunch on a sunny afternoon?
She was anxious. She still couldn’t make up her mind: to leave, or to stay.
It was all his fault. Jung Yonghwa’s fault.
She had coincidentally spotted him when she was on her way back from lunch. She had following him since then, though she was supposed to be back to work. She followed him to that café. Sitting in a table right across from him, where he could see her clearly (where she could see him clearly). But after more than 2 hours of waiting, he still couldn’t recognize her.
Did he really forget?
Did she change that much?
She could recognize him in a blink of an eye, why couldn’t he?
Let alone seeing her, he didn’t even spare her a glance. He was just sitting there, drinking his iced Americano with his eyes glued tightly at a thick book about Che Guevara. Since when did he like reading that much? And Che Guevara?
She knew it all could end with her coming to him and said a simple, “Hi, it’s me, Seohyun, do you remember me?”
But her pride banned her from doing so.
If those words should be said, it should be him who said it first.
She looked out through the glass window, the water started dripping from the sky. She checked her wrist watch for the umpteenth time.
That was it, she decided. She had to go back to her office. Screw you, Oppa!
Seohyun stood up and walked hurriedly to the door. She stood outside and realized it was dripping hard. It was gonna rain indeed.
“Aish,” she muttered while preparing to run.
But then a hand gripped her elbow and turned her around. She was surprised to face Jung Yonghwa.
“Where are you going?”
Her eyes widen, stuttered she answered that she was going back to work.
“But it’s raining, are you planning to run all the way to your office without an umbrella?” he asked, “stay for awhile more, at least until the rain stops, you have been ditching your work for 2 hours anyway,” he added.
He knew?
He chuckled seeing Seohyun’s bewildered expression.
“I know you waited for me to come to you first,” he said, Seohyun gasped, “but I thought, I will wait for you instead. I didn’t expect much, but I didn’t think you’d runaway and just leave me like that. Luckily I was fast enough to stop you.”
Seohyun stared at him disbelievingly.
“Do you think I forgot you?” he stared back, “I don’t, Seohyun-ah… I won’t.”
They looked at each other for about 5 seconds, when Yonghwa suddenly pulled her by her wrist, “Come inside,” he said, “I’ll treat you another green tea latte,” he continued.
“But my work…”
“Screw your work.”
As the rain started to shower the earth, the lightning flashed in the sky, followed by the angry thunder, Yonghwa and Seohyun took a seat in a table beside the glass window, with a cup of green tea latte for Seohyun, and iced Americano for Yonghwa. They’re talking, catching up with each other, teasing and laughing, just like good old days.
Seohyun didn’t check her watch, or worried about the weather. Jung Yonghwa was sitting in front of her, with his playful smile and big brown eyes looking at her. So, screw the world.
