"Miyume! Could you go next door and give this to Yui-chan?” Your mother pushed some freaky cooking device that faintly resembled a toaster and a waffle maker into your arms. “She let me borrow it so I could try it out. But I couldn’t exactly figure it out.”

You smiled a little at the memory of this morning when your mother almost burnt down the kitchen because she didn’t realize that the temperature dial was set to “REALLY HOT” and walked away to make the rest of breakfast. The smoke alarm went off, making you jump out of your skin (and your bed) as you ran down the stairs to see your mother covered in flour, trying to unplug the device. You ran to her side to help her but as you did, you knocked the bowl over that was sitting on the counter and you found yourself covered in eggs.

But even though you loved your mom, you realllly didn’t want to go next door. In all honesty, you’d rather get your teeth pulled than to go next door. Oh, you didn’t have anything against Yui-san. She was fun and very kind but her son…. Is a different story. It’s not that he’s mean to you- it’s the exact opposite, really- and it’s not that he’s ugly either; he was pretty cute. That may be way you can’t stand him.

Before you knew it, you were next door, pressing the doorbell. A deep sigh escaped your lips. Please, please let it be Yui-san who answers the door or her husband (he was pretty cool too). There was rustling on the other side of the door and a few voices, and then the door opened to reveal the person she hoped wouldn’t answer.

“Ah! Mi-chan!” The boy smiled and he opened the door a little wider, allowing you to see behind him. Two other boys peered around the boy to look at you curiously.

“Hey, Ryosuke-kun.” You greeted. Holding out the kitchen appliance to him, you said, “Mom wants to thank Yui-san for letting her borrow this.. umm… thing..? Though.. she didn’t too well with it.” You chuckled and Ryosuke laughed along as well. “That’s all. I’ll see you later.”

“Wait, Mi-chan! Do you want to hang out for a bit? You’ve met these two before, right?” You looked at the two boys behind him and recognized them as Yuto Nakajima and Daiki Arioka from Hey!Say!JUMP. Ryosuke introduced you to all of his band mates one time when you came over for his birthday party a year or so ago. They were a crazy bunch, but they weren’t as bad as you thought they’d be. You actually ended up liking them.

You were brought back to the present as Ryosuke asked again if you’d like to stay for a while. Smiling politely, you declined and started to walk back down the sidewalk. You knew in your head that you in fact want to stay, but you stubbornly walked back into your house, up your stairs and into your room.

Yes, you are next door neighbors with the Ryosuke Yamada. But it isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Your mother and Ryosuke’s mom were friends from when your parents first moved here 18 years ago; and three years later Ryosuke was born, and then 7 months later you came along. You’ve been friends since forever but as Ryosuke began to go into show business, you saw less and less of him.

Before becoming a Johnny, Ryosuke was popular, yes, but not like he was now. He didn’t have every girl in school hanging all over him, or all the guys wanting to be him. He was cute but now he was being described as ‘cool’ and ‘sexy’. He’s 15 for crying out loud! A 15 year old shouldn’t be sexy! Before, Ryosuke would come over and ask if you were available to go play, now he’s caught up with TV shows, dramas, concerts and on top of that, his school work.

It almost feels like he left you behind. He grew up and you’re still a kid. He became popular and traveled all over Japan singing and gathering thousands of fans. And when you two used to go hang out around Tokyo, he’d have to wear disguises so he wouldn’t be recognized by his rabid fangirls. And once, a fan saw you walking home together and posted on her blog that Ryosuke Yamada was having a scandal- because Johnny boys weren’t allowed to be in relationships- and envious girls wouldn’t leave you alone for weeks. It took nearly a month for the whole thing to blow over.

Maybe the reason you didn’t like to be around him anymore was because of jealousy… Or maybe you didn’t like the fact that he was growing up and slowly moving away from you. Perhaps it scared you that the little boy you once thought of as a brother is now a very cute, talented 15 year old. His smiling face flashed through your mind and you felt heat radiating from your ears and cheeks.

Ding.

Your eyes went to the screen of your laptop, and there was a little pink envelope icon floating smack-dab in the middle. You reached over to the keyboard and clicked it.

‘Hey. You feeling ok? When you came over earlier, you seemed a little dazed.’

You couldn’t stop the smile that spread on your face as you read the little email and saw a picture of a strawberry at the end. What a dork… really, his obsession with strawberries was ridiculous.

At first you thought that replying immediately would seem a little.. desperate. Perhaps that wasn’t the exact word- but still. You waited for a minute then typed back:

‘I’m alright, don’t worry. ^-^ ‘

And just for fun, you added a picture of blueberries at the end- your favorite food. You and Ryosuke argued countless times about which were better: strawberries or blueberries. The fights would last hours until you both got tired of arguing, then you’d both look at each other and end up laughing until your stomachs hurt.

Ding.

‘If you say so… Hey Miyume?’

‘I do say so. XP …yes?’

You waited for a few minutes and you got no reply. Eyebrows furrowing in confusion, you checked the time. 16 minutes have passed… 24 minutes… 29 minutes…

“Miyume, dear! Time for dinner!!!” The voice of your mom snapped you out of your state and standing up, you took one last glance at the screen before you headed down stairs to dinner.

As you ate, you mother asked about the …cooking contraption, making sure you delivered it to Yui-san. Swallowing your food, you stated that Yui-san wasn’t home when you walked over, but you gave it to Ryosuke.

You really should’ve known better than to mention Ryosuke around your dad. He was dead-set on getting you two together. He claims it’s “destiny from the heavens above” or something like that. Weird, huh? You’d think that most dads would want to isolate their daughters from the teenage population of males, but not your dad. Once, he told Ryosuke that he wanted a lot of grandchildren from the two of you. You couldn’t look at Ryosuke for days after that.

“Ahhh.. Ryosuke. How is he? Have you two been hanging out lately?” Your father pressed on, “Are you going out?” You blushed and tried to cover it up by taking a sip of milk. “DON’T TELL ME YOU’RE ALREADY ENGAGED!?”

The milk you were drinking suddenly decided to go in the opposite direction of your stomach and tried to exit via your nose. Coughing and stuttering, you denied your fathers accusation.

Sulking, your father left you alone after your mother scolded him for such behavior at the dinner table. Silently thanking your mom with a smile, you finished up your dinner and returned to your room.

A cold gust of wind blew from your window as you walked into your light green room. Hurriedly, you closed the window but not before looking next door, taking note that Ryosuke’s light was on in his room. You blinked and then shook your head. What if he saw that! If he didn’t think you were stalker material before, he would now! GYAH!

Flopping on your fluffy bed, you pulled your short hair into a ponytail, the shorter hairs falling around your face. You rolled to your stomach, reaching for your laptop. The Email icon was floating on your screen again. Nervously, you clicked it.
‘Mi-channn~ You’ll never guess what just happened! Go ahead, guess anyway~!!!!! =3’

Oh. It was Aya. It shocked you how much you wished it was Ryosuke’s email. Replying to your friend, you got up to change into your pajamas. Walking across the room, you grabbed your comfortable cotton pjs and began to strip. After pulling your head through the shirt, your eyes drifted to the movement outside your window.

Outside your window?! Why was there movement outside the window! Unless…. You looked again at the window and your eyes widened in horror. You didn’t pull the shade down! Running to the window, and begging that there were no perverts down there looking at you, you looked out scanning the area. You didn’t see anyone.. or anything. So you guessed that you were safe.

Ding.

‘Would it be ok if I came over?’

Ba-bump.

Whaaaaat?! The heat returned to your face as you reread Ryosuke’s email again and again. You looked at the clock. It was 10:32pm. Your parents would be asleep by now… and having Ryosuke alone with you at night in your room, made you a little uneasy. Butterflies exploded in your stomach and your fingers trembled as you replied to his email.

After you clicked ‘send’ you immediately wished you could have the email back. The butterflies grew and your face grew hotter and hotter. Quietly, you exited your room and tiptoes downstairs to the back door where you would let Ryosuke in. Standing at the door, you rested your forehead against the cool wood and tried to calm your breathing by taking deep breaths. Why was this affecting you so? It’s not like you never had Ryosuke come over in the middle of the night. Once, you had a bad dream and he came over to comfort you. You’ve even had sleepovers at each others houses! This. Shouldn’t. Be. A. Big. Deal. ARGH! You stopped thumping your head against the door as you sighed.

Soft knocking interrupted your inner debate and you jumped away from the door. With an unsteady hand, you unlocked the door and opened it, revealing Ryosuke. The lights from the street lamps and the moon created a silver halo around the boy who stood at the door.

“U-um. Hey.” You said, letting him walk past you before you closed the door, allowing the darkness to swallow you both.

“Hey.” His voice was close, you could practically feel his breath against your face. You skin tingled. Darn these stupid hormones.

“Let’s go to my room?” You suggested and after he 'hmmed' in response, you led him up the stairs and into your room. You peeked out the door to see if your parents heard anything but the lights to their room were out, so you figured you were safe. Your door shut quietly and you turned to find Ryosuke sitting on your bed, looking at your stuffed animals.

Awkwardly, you sat down on your bed a distance away. “Um….” You tried to think of a conversation starter, but the only thing that was repeating in your head was ‘Ryosuke… alone… bed… Ryosuke… alone… bed’.

“Do you not like me?” His voice cut through the room.

Well, gee, that’s a good way to start off… “What?”

He looked at you with the most intense gaze you’ve ever seen. Now you know why he has so many fangirls… “You’ve been avoiding me lately.”

A spark of annoyance flared in your stomach. You were avoiding him? “I don’t know what you’re talking about. I’ve just been busy is all.”

“I don’t believe you.” He stated. “Every time I ask you to come over, you decline. You never want to hang out anymore. And you can’t stand to be around me for more than 30 minutes. And your emails are short and you just… don’t talk to me anymore.”

You looked down at the blanket as you heard the hurt in his voice. You really didn’t think it was a big deal to him. After all, he was famous now and had a lot of friends at Johnny’s Entertainment. Psh, he probably had friends all around the world… But now, when you looked at the so-called sexy idol, you only saw the little boy with the crooked smile that you came to love.

Love.

Your eyes lit up with realization. That’s it.

Ryosuke kept going, “And I don’t know exactly what happened- if something happened at all- and I’m sorry if it was my fault. You know I can be kinda dumb at times… And sometimes I’m slow..”

A gentle smile grew on your lips as you watched Ryosuke ramble on.

“Ryosuke.” He stopped talking and looked at you. The butterflies returned but they were softer now, not as nerve-wrecking, and they were warm. “I’m sorry.” You started out. “It’s my fault, really. You didn’t do anything- it was me and my messed up head. I guess… I guess I was angry that you were growing up without me. You didn’t need me around anymore so I left before I would get hurt even more. You’re so… so…” Perfect. You stopped. “You’re Ryosuke Yamada. Girls would kill to be within a 10 foot distance of you… And because you got so popular.. I expected you to come home one day with a girl and be like, “This is my girlfriend.” … And I really didn’t want to see that… Ryosuke… You’ve changed.” You took a deep breath. “What I mean to say is…. I hate these stupid teenage hormones.”

Ryosuke sat in silence for a moment and you begged the gods for something to happen. Is he going to say something? Maybe throw up? SOMETHING HAPPEN, PLEASE!

“Miyume…” He finally broke the silence.

It took a few seconds for you to find your voice. You swallowed. “Yes?”

His question was so quiet that if you weren’t looking at his lips, you would’ve never understood it.

“Can I kiss you?”

Your eyes widened and your jaw dropped. Did he- He just- Ryosuke asked- Ohmygod. “Wha-”

With graceful swiftness, Ryosuke moved forward and held the back of your neck and planted his lips upon your shaking ones. A wave of heat bursted from the point of contact and you couldn’t help but sigh as the warmth engulfed you. Slowly, you raised your arm and rested your palm against his warm cheek, your fingertips tangled within his locks. Feeling brave, you leaned into him, kissing back.

The kiss ended soon after it started- it was probably only 8 seconds long. But they were the best 8 seconds of your life. “Ryosuke?”

He hugged you but because you were in an awkward sitting position, you fell backwards on the bed with Ryosuke above you. You ‘Eeeep’ed and Ryosuke chuckled. He rolled off you to lay on his side, his body propped up by his elbow. He looked down at you with a shy smile. “I’m so relieved. I thought you actually hated me.”

“I don’t.” You reassured him as you reached up to brush some of his bangs away from his face.

“Good.” He swooped down and kissed you on the nose. “I’m glad.” His face lit up as a thought struck him. “That’s right.”

“What’s right?” You wondered, sitting up as Ryosuke stood up and walked to the window.

He shut the window entirely, pulling down both the shade and shutting the curtains. “I can’t have guys looking at my girlfriend. Especially when she changes. Only I’m allowed to see her.”

You blinked. And as the words hit you, your face blew up completely red. “You!” You pointed at him as he walked to the door.

“Me?” He feigned an innocent look.

“You were the pervert!” Your mouth was agape and your mind was a total blank. “I- You- Window- Pervert!”

He laughed as he began to exit the room. “Tomorrow at 11:00 I’m coming to pick you up for our date. Don’t forget ok?” He winked and in a few seconds, he disappeared.

You were left staring at the door, face still blushing. You couldn’t believe Ryosuke saw you as you were changing!!!!!

Ding.

You gave your attention to the forgotten piece of technology that still sat on your bed. Debating whether to open it or not, curiosity finally got the best of you and you clicked the icon.

‘I’m sorry. I couldn’t resist teasing you.-‘

Your eye twitched.

‘-But I just wanted to say, I love you… Goodnight.’

With a wide smile on your face you replied and closed the laptop, placing it on the floor. You dove under the bed sheets and finally erupted into a spasm of giggles. You clutched your stuffed bunny to your chest and you fell asleep with a smile on your lips. Needless to say, your dad sure will be happy when he finds out about this.

The End~
