“Alright, now that we’re back from break-” your homeroom teacher placed a tissue box on the podium, “It’s time to change seats.”

Groans echoed throughout the classroom and a few voiced complaints that there was nothing wrong with the way the seats were now; but the students’ protests fell on deaf ears. One by one, your classmates went up to the front and grabbed a slip of paper from the small box, moving out of the way to find their new seats and perhaps bargain or trade to get a more preferred spot.

You walked up with Saki and Rina and waited for your turn to grab from the used tissue box. Rina went before you and squealed when she found out that she grabbed the seat right behind her hubby. She jumped into Yusuke’s arms and he spun her happily.

You swore you saw flowers dancing around them.

You sighed and reached into the box. Unfolding the small piece of paper, you saw the number 20: the second seat from the window, in the second to last row. In other words, completely on the other side of the room, isolated from your best friends.

“Mami-channnnnn~” Rina sobbed.

“Rina-channnn!” You clung to her like your life depended on it.

A ‘tsk’ reached your ears but you ignored it as you continued to hold onto Rina. Saki did a dance when she revealed that she picked the seat next to Rina. That made you squeeze your friend harder to the point where she was swatting at you to let go because you were cutting off her air.

After calming down, you traded your almost-but-not-quite window spot for the seat behind Rina and diagonally behind Saki. Extremely happy that you were close to your friends, you didn’t mind the fact that you were against the hallway wall.

“I have to sit behind you?”

Your eye twitched. That voice… you slowly turned your head to look behind you, dreading what you might find.

UGH. You could feel your face contort in annoyance. “What’s with the disgusted tone?!” You mumbled.

Miyadate Ryota. The bane of your high school existence. Ever since your first year of high school he was a complete jerk to you. Totally uncalled for. And God must’ve found pain in your suffering because he put you two in the same class every year.

“Now, now, Ryota.” Watanabe Shota chided before sliding in the seat next to you. Grinning his toothy grin, he greeted you. Nodding with a smile, you gave a final glare to Miyadate and faced forward to continue your conversation with Saki and Rina.

{RABURABUCHUUUU}

“KYAHHHHHHHHHHH!” Rina squealed as she hugged the April issue of Potato against her chest. “Hikaru’s so dreamyyyyyy~~~” Little imaginary hearts spun around your best friend as she fan-girled over her favorite HeySayJUMP member.

“Do you see that dark cloud over there?” You pointed to the area in front of your best friend. Yusuke sat in his chair with watery eyes emitting a dark aura.

Nabesho leaned closer to you and looked in the direction you were indicating. “Ah, I see it, I see it.”

You kept watching as Rina continued to praise the boy in the magazine, while Yusuke practically crumbled into himself, sulking.

“Rina-chan!” You snatched the magazine from the girl and wacked her over the head. “Look what you did to Yusuke-kun!”

“Ah! Yu-chan! I’m so sorry! You know I love you best, right?” Rina appeared next to Yusuke’s side and he looked up at her through watery eyes.

Everyone held their breath as they waited to see what Yusuke would do.

Within a millisecond, Yusuke’s eyes were completely dry and the couple was in an embrace.

“I know, Ri-chan~ I love you.”

“I love love love you, Yu-chan!”

“I love love love love love Ri-chan!”

Your eye twitched again as even more hearts popped up around the couple along with rainbows and flowers when you heard a voice behind you.

“What an idiot couple.”

With a small laugh, you agreed and turned to comment on the statement. However once you realized that Miyadate was the one who spoke up, you snapped your jaw shut and spun back in your chair.

{RABURABUCHUUUU}

“I’m starting to think he likes you.”

You choked on your juice and erupted into a painful coughing fit. Sputtering, you pounded your chest as Saki asked if you were ok.

Regaining your breath, you looked at your best friend with the most perplexed expression. What was she on to come to that idea? “Um. Rina.” You waved, signaling her to lean closer. “You do notice how he’s mean to me every day, right?”

“Well, yeah.” She spoke in a hushed whisper while pointing to the corner of the room where Miyadate, Nabesho, Yusuke and a few other guys from the class sat while eating their lunches.  “But you know what they used to say, if a guy likes a girl, he’s mean to her.”

You deadpanned. “That was elementary school. We’re in high school, Rina.”

Her face was unimpressed. “I know, Mami. He probably likes you so much that he is just unintentionally mean. Like, it’s just the first thing that comes out of his mouth.”

You sat back and snorted at her crazy idea. It’s just not believable. Yeah, little kids tease each other but when it’s guys in high school, it’s because they don’t like you. You frowned at the comment he made last week when you came to school after you cut your hair.

“What happened to your hair?”

Unconsciously, you tugged at your hair that was cut to your shoulders. Yusuke came back to sit with Rina and the two of them began to make RABU-RABU eyes at each other as they fed each other parts of their lunches. With a bittersweet smile, you wished that you could have someone like that. Even Saki had a boyfriend- he went to a private school, though.

You flipped through the Potato magazine and came to the Mis Snow Man photo shoot. You studied the boys dressed in fancy suits- looking a lot like princes. Finding your classmates, Nabesho and Miyadate, you found your heart fluttering as you stared at the boy who was always making your days miserable. Once you felt your cheeks getting warm, you snapped your eyes away and shut the magazine.

With a huff, you rested your chin on your hand as you waited for the lunch hour to be over. You would rather fall in love with Nabesho than him.

{RABURABUCHUUUU}

“Good morning, Mami-chan!” Nabesho chirped as he entered the classroom.

“Morning Nabesho.” You smiled at the cheerful boy, but your expression faltered as you caught Miyadate’s gaze. Usually the boy wasn’t a morning person to begin with, but he seemed to have an especially ugly face this fine morning.

“Why the sour face?” you grumbled.

“Shut up.” He mumbled with what you thought was a glare.

Frowning, you stuck out your tongue and turned to talk to Nabesho. Right, Rina, he totally liked you. As you chatted with Nabesho before your homeroom teacher arrived.

Class was, needless to say, uneventful. But you were suddenly convinced someone was out to get you. You were assigned cleaning duty with Miyadate and another girl.

Fun.

“I’m so sorry but I can’t clean up today.” Your classmate bowed and looked at you with a pleading face.

“Uh, it’s ok, really. It’s no big deal.”

“Thank you so much!” And with a blink, she was at the end of the hallway, disappearing to the stairs.

With a sigh you turned around to face the scowling SnowMan. Silently, you went to work erasing the chalk board as Miyadate reached for the broom. Frowning, you jumped to reach the top of the chalkboard. Sensei isn’t even that tall, how did he even write that high up? It took a few extra hops to completely clear about a sixth of the front chalk board.

You decided to erase all that you could reach first and then go back to get the higher places with a chair. But when you erased a calculus equation that was level with your eyes, a rough hand stretched from behind you and took the eraser from your hand, brushing against your fingers and causing you to nearly jump out of your skin and your hand to tingle. Looking over your shoulder you nearly stopped breathing when you realized how close Miyadate was.

Was he always this tall? And when did he smell this good?

Silently he erased the rest of the chalkboard with ease and you turned around, holding your hand against your chest in an attempt to calm your spazzing heart. That was… completely unexpected.

Snapping back to reality, you straightened the desks and wiped down the surfaces. Even though it was winter and the days were short, the sun was just beginning to fall behind the horizon as you exited the school.

It was silent.

Awkwardly silent.

Side-by-side you walked down the sidewalk with the boy who you thought hated your guts, but he hasn’t said a word yet.

You needed to break the silence somehow.

“So, Valentines is coming up…” you started, looking at your feet as you walked.

He hummed.

Well, gee. That worked.

“Are you going to make chocolates for Shota?”

It took you a second to register that Miyadate asked you a question.

“Nabesho?”

He nodded.

You paused for a moment. To be honest, you haven’t really thought of it but since the seat change, you’ve become pretty good friends with the boy.

“…Yeah. I think so.”

Miyadate didn’t comment.

Suddenly feeling daring, you grinned at him. “Why? Did you want chocolates?”

You were expecting a glare and a biting comment from Miyadate, but what you got nearly threw you twenty feet back.

“I do.”

{RABURABUCHUUUU}

“What do you mean you’re not coming to school?” Rina and Saki stood threateningly over your bed as you hid underneath your comforter.

“I dun wanna go.” You curled further into a ball.

The entire walk home after the uh… incident was completely silent and you parted ways at the station.

And your heart hasn’t stopped pounding in your chest. Your face felt so hot, you thought you had a fever.

Maybe you did have a fever and you imagined the whole thing.

That could happen, right?

“You-!” Rina smacked you through the sheets. “Get up and get ready! Don’t make me forcefully dress you!”

Groaning, you rolled out of bed and sloppily got ready for class. As you looked at your reflection as you tried to fix your hair, you wondered how he would act today. Would he go back to the way he always was? Or would he suddenly start being nice- like the boy you were with after class?

“HEY. HURRY UP YOU LAZY BUM.” Rina shrieked from downstairs.

“I’M COMING, SHEESH.” You shouted back as you grabbed your cell phone and bag as you exited your bedroom.

{RABURABUCHUUUU}

All those times you were trapped in an awkward situation is nothing compared to the awkwardness that you were experiencing now.

You spotted Miyadate at the station as you were getting off the train, and his eyes met yours. Shota appeared beside him and somehow, you all were walking to class together.  Rina walked with Yusuke, Shota left Miyadate’s side and walked with Saki, leaving you to walk with Miyadate. You gulped and fiddled with the sleeves of your jacket, searching for anything to say to break the thick tension. Your mind was completely distracted as you walked to school and you nearly ran into a telephone pole before Miyadate pulled you out of the way.

Face red, you looked up at the boy who held your arm. He snapped his arm back and turned away. “Idiot.”

You huffed and glared at the boy, speeding up your pace to walk in front of him.

He didn’t like you, you were sure of it.

{RABURABUCHUUUU}

“Hey, Mami-chan, can I talk to you?” Nabesho asked you when lunch break rolled around. Your friends all halted in conversation to see what was going on.

“Yeah, sure. What’s up?”

“Come with me?” He gestured to the door and you were suddenly aware of a certain pair of eyes watching you as you exited the classroom.

Nabesho silently led you down the hallway to the stairwell. Your heart was thumping against your ribcage and you felt your palms start to get clammy. After walking halfway down the stair case, Nabesho turned to face you. Looking around to make sure no one was there, he stepped a bit closer to you.

Your eyes widened.

He wasn’t going to-? Was he?

“Mami-chan…” He stared at you with the most serious expression.

“W-what?”

“Ryota’s shy.” He spoke.

You blinked, soaking in his comment. “Ryota? …Miyadate?”

Nabesho nodded.

“But, um…” You were trying to voice your thoughts- but they were just all over the place at the moment.

“Shota!”

Your head shot up to find Miyadate standing at the top of the stairwell, flustered.

“Ah, Ryota!” Nabesho beamed at his friend.

Within seconds, Miyadate was next to you and he pulled you down the stairwell and right outside the school doors.

Surprise, surprise. The silence came back.

“Um, Miyadate-”

“I like you.” Your heart squeezed in your chest. Conflicting thoughts buzzed in your head: He likes me? But he was so mean all the time. Miyadate Ryota likes ME. He’s a Johnnys, he can’t have a relationship. I don’t believe it- it has to be a joke. Of all the girls, he likes me. He likes…. Me. Why do I feel like crying? I’m so happy.

“I really like you, Mami.” He looked up at you with a serious expression but when you looked at him, you could see the fear swimming in the dark brown eyes. “Please go out with me.”

Your throat completely closed up and you tried to find your voice. Taking a deep breath, you opened your mouth to respond.

“Hey! You two! Lunch is over, get back to class!” A second-year teacher scolded the pair.

“R-right. Sorry.” You both bowed and hurried back to class, faces bright red.

As it turned out, you were so nervous after the confession that you weren’t able to look Miyadate in the eye and ended up bolting as soon as class was over. You frantically called your best friend for help in this matter.

“Just tell him tomorrow.” She simply said.

“Tomorrow?”

“It’s Valentine’s Day. Just answer him when you give him your chocolates.”

You looked at the bag that sat on your desk. It was filled with chocolates you made with Saki and Rina yesterday in preparation. “…..Right. thanks Rina.”

“Mhmm. No problem.”

{RABURABUCHUUUU}

The next day, it felt like the time it took to your classroom took a lot less than normal. Within a blink of an eye, you entered the classroom and Miyadate was already there. Sitting at the desk right next to the door.

“Good morning.” You looked down at the floor and clutched your school bag a little harder.

“Hmm. Morning.”

You looked around the classroom and no one was there yet. Taking a deep breath, you fumbled with the zipper of your bag and shakily held out a small box wrapped neatly with a pink ribbon. He took the box and pulled at the ribbon, watching it unravel.

Gosh, why was it taking so long! It was torture.

You bit your bottom lip.

He opened the lid and he was still for a second.

You wanted to scream.

“Mami?”

You looked up to find Miyadate a lot closer than he was a few seconds ago. Suddenly, you saw something that made your heart explode.

Ryota smiled.

His eyes were crinkled and his teeth were showing. His cheeks were flushed from nervousness or excitement, you didn’t know. “Thank you for the honmeichoco.”

“N-n-no. It’s no problem, really.”

Gently, Ryota leaned forward and you felt all of your muscles tense up. His lips gently pressed against your own and almost too quickly, you relaxed and leaned towards this boy who managed to tug at your heartstrings.

“Whooooo~~~ What’s this?!” a voice shattered the calm atmosphere.

Snapping away from Ryota, you looked towards the door. There stood Nabesho and your friends. Heat raced to your face and you heard your blood pounding in your head.

“No rated R things allowed in the classroom!” Nabesho and Rina teased, holding their arms in an ‘X’ symbol.

“Shut up!” Ryota blushed, and waved his fist at Nabesho.

“We weren’t-!” You tried to defend.

Your friends burst into laughter and eventually, the giddiness of the situation caught up with you and you and Ryota found yourselves laughing along.

You looked to your side and caught Ryota’s gaze. He stopped laughing and gave you a shy smile.

Smiling back, you reached for his hand and gave it a squeeze. The past few years have been a serious game of cat and mouse, getting on each other’s nerves and all; but as far as you were concerned, as you stood in the classroom with Ryota’s fingers laced with your own, the childish game was worth it.

A few moments later, you noticed the cute package that Nabesho walked in with. “Nabesho, who’s that from?”

He looked at the bag with a smile. “Someone special.”

“Whoooooo~~~” Ryota teased, ruffling Nabesho’s hair with his free hand. “Shota’s growing up!”

“Hey! Shut up!” As classmates filed into the room, they couldn’t help but gang up on Nabesho, laughing at his flustered face. You laughed out loud, feeling as if you were soaring high above the clouds.

‘I like you too, Ryota.’
