Summary: Usually there's three bags of valentine's chocolate at the Matsumoto household. This year, there's FOUR. DD8
Jun walked into the kitchen to find bowls and pans towered high on the counter along with utensils of all sorts scattered across the marble surface. His wife stood in front of the stove, with his daughter standing on a chair next to her, as she tended to a pan which gave off the aroma of chocolate.
Jun made his way to his family and peered over his wife’s shoulder to confirm that, yes, he was right: it was chocolate.
“Smells good.” He complimented. Mai beamed up at her father with a large toothy smile and voiced her agreement. Jun ruffled her hair and chuckled as Rei shooed him away with the spatula, claiming that he couldn’t taste until they’re finished.
Retreating to the couch, he turned on the television and began his wait for the valentines’ chocolate to be finished. Giggles, whispers and squeals came from the kitchen and Jun couldn’t help but smile at the giddy noises coming from the two most important women in his life. (Well, he cared about his mother too, but you know.) When he heard the clattering of pots, pans and the various clanging of utensils being placed in the dishwasher, Jun knew they were just about done. Not two minutes later, Rei popped her head around the doorway and granted him permission to come into the kitchen.
He ‘tsk’ed at all of the unused pots and pans scattered around the kitchen and looked over to his daughter who moved her chair down a few feet and was leaning over the counter with a marker. He grinned when he saw the little chocolates wrapped neatly in decorative plastic wrap. Mai was busy writing the cards “Mama” and “Papa” to attach to the bags, and Jun saw that Rei already attached “Mai-chan” to one of the valentine-themed bags.
But something was off.
There were- Jun counted- four bags? “Mai-chan, um, Why are there four bags? Did you end up making too many chocolates?”
Jun caught the grin on his wife’s face and suddenly felt a wave of nausea hit him when his daughter looked up at him with her 6-year-old smile and said:
“These are for Yuta-kun!”
That was when Jun lost his “cool”.
“Yu-yu-yuta-kun?” Jun’s voice shook. “Who’s Yuta-kun?”
Rei spoke up with the grin still on her face, “He’s a boy in Mai-chan’s class~. Right, Mai-chan?”
“Yep~.” Mai grinned as she wrote “Yuta” on a small card that, Jun noted, was much more extravagant than the simple pink ones that were attached to the other bags. Jun’s sharp eyes also spotted a pink bag with a sheet of stickers and a pre-tied bow.
This Yuta-kun was awfully special to get an extra bag and ribbon, wasn’t he?
“Mai-chan’s going to ask Yuta-kun if he’d be her Valentine.” Rei smiled at her daughter who smiled shyly at the bag of chocolates in her hands.
Jun’s eye twitched a bit and he forced himself to take a deep breath. They’re just chocolates, he told himself, nothing too serious. It’s just candy. …Candy which is given out on Valentine’s day where girls confess to guys and become a couple and then the girl spends all her time with her boyfriend and- “BUT SHE’S ONLY SIX!!”
“You’re shouting, dear-”
“SIX YEARS OLD!”
“-Yes, I know.” Rei took all four bags of chocolate and placed them in the fridge for tomorrow- Valentine’s Day.

Jun glared at the calendar.
It was Valentine’s Day.
Rei seemed a little weary when Jun declared he was taking Mai to school today, but smiled widely when Mai handed her her chocolates and told her daughter that she couldn’t wait to show them off at work. She kissed her daughter good bye and wished her luck with a wink. Mai giggled.
The car ride was mostly silent- Jun focusing on driving and Mai fidgeting more and more often as they got closer to her elementary school. She’d fiddle with the pink bag sitting in her lap, touch her clothes, meddle with her hair, and squirm in her seat.
Jun gripped the wheel tightly as he pulled up to the kindergarten and said goodbye to his daughter who nervously got out of the car and greeted her friends who instantly asked her about her pink bag.
A car horn snapped Jun back to reality and he glared at the person in the vehicle behind him. He saw two young boys entering the gate of the kindergarten, and felt a jolt run through him when he heard Mai’s friends yell, “It’s Yuta!!!”
Snapping his head in the direction of his daughter, he saw her face turn pink and her friends began giggling and whispering to another. The bell chimed signaling that school was about to start, and the kids all entered the large building. Jun frowned when he realized he could no longer see his daughter or the two boys-one of which was Yuta-kun.
The car behind him honked, again, and Jun grudgingly shifted his car to drive and left the elementary school; even though a large part of him wanted to park his car right there and follow Mai to her class.

“You are so immature.” Rei announced to her husband as they stood in front of his car, staring at the elementary school building. When Jun declared that he was going to pick up Mai, Rei decided it would be best for her to come along as well.
School had ended and Jun was frantically searching for the two boys- or rather, one of the two boys- that he saw this morning.
“Ah! There’s Mai-chan and Yuta-kun!” Rei noted and Jun frantically searched for his daughter. Spotting her, he zeroed in on the boy walking a little too close to his daughter. Eyes narrowing, he watched as they exited the main gates. Mai’s back was to him, and he saw Yuta-kun give her a small smile.
“Mai-chan!” He called out; watching as Mai spun around and Yuta-kun looked in their direction. Mai gave a small pout and turned back around, most likely saying goodbye to Yuta-kun, and trotted over to her parents.
Rei elbowed him with a small frown and afterwards, greeted her daughter and gave her a hug. Yuta-kun watched Mai enter the car, and Jun was watching him. Finally Yuta-kun’s eyes met with Jun’s and he mouthed the words, “I’m watching you, boy.”
Rei smacked the back of Jun’s head and smiling, waved to Yuta-kun who waved back, bowed, and turned to walk down the street.
In the car, Mai was telling her parent’s about her day and Jun gripped the steering wheel as he waited for what was to eventually come.
“Ne, Mai-chan, did you give Yuta-kun your chocolates?” Rei inquired.
Jun glanced into the rear-view mirror and saw Mai look down to her lap. “I did.” A silence fell over the inside of the car and Rei gave Jun a worried look, which he exchanged. If that Yuta-kun rejected his Mai-chan’s chocolates, booooy did he have it coming to him.
“What happened sweetie?” Rei asked gently.
“He took them and smiled-” Jun saw Mai look up with a happy smile on her face, and he couldn’t help but let a small smile stretch across his face as well.
“-and then he asked me to be his girlfriend and I said yes!” Mai beamed.
After Jun slammed on the breaks, Rei told him to pull over so that she could drive and Jun sat in the back while Mai moved to sit in her mother’s original seat.
“….BUT SHE’S ONLY SIX!!!” Jun cried.
LOL. Remember how this series was supposed to be finished by the end of summer? I'm a failure. XD
But here's another piece to the Familial Moments saga.
I totally see Jun as being the psycho-dad who is overprotective of his daughter. Don't you? >:D
&& I plan to have at least two more valentine-related fics posted by Valentines if I don't procrastinate like I did with this one...
