Geeked out in the magic kingdom

In what was probably not the wisest move of my career, today I tip-toed into BattleNet for Diablo II. (I blame the WoWers...)

...ohgod. I am a flailing newbie. I can't remember the last time this happened in my life. While I certainly know one end of my Horadric cube from the other, and am accomplished at killing Diablo with one hand tied behind my back, I have no idea what all this party business is, how to go about with people, what the etiquette is about joining games, or muscling in on kills, or who gets the gems. (Everyone just seemed to be running away and leaving them on the ground! Gemses! *looks shifty and swipes*)

I flailed, and I squeaked, and in hideous embarrassment I quit out entirely. But, um, well, maybe I want to go back. But the newbieness! It burns us, precious! So I guess what I'm curious about is whether anyone out there plays and would be interested in showing me about, or has played and can offer advice on the etiquette of the place. Because eek!

Oh, and I pulled the sorceress icon back. Because I'm playing a sorceress called Olga-Lena (yes, I trawled Nochnoi Dozor for names). Her static field is the suck. And she has a club. She is the least classy sorceress in the world.
