Rant--Writing RPS

One of the newer friends on my flist, the lovely shoshannagold, made me rant yesterday, because she foolishly asked me a question about writing. Specifically about writing RPS. Hence my rantiness, coz as you all know, get me going on that topic, and you can't shut me up ( Read more... )

Oh wow I was thinking about this today too. I’ve found myself doing a little more research than I would like for the current fic I’m working on. It combines real life pictures with a completely made up story that creates juxtaposition. So I had to know when the pictures were taken, the number of days between the pics and a few other factual details but I think it’s very important to realize when to let go of the reality and let the story take control.

You can’t write the story (in my opinion) and have everything line up with reality so there is no point to researching every single detail. I like having something tangible to place within the story and I like reading stories that do the same but it does create limits. At the same time I don’t mind doing research and going against reality if I find out that my story won’t work with the real facts.

I also find that my comfort level varies depending on what I’m writing. I always research Viggorli more than Orlijah. I have written pages of material from Elijah’s prospective without doing any research other than the knowledge I have already picked up here and there. I think this is because I’m closer to Elijah’s age it’s very easy to get his fictional take on things.

I don’t read any of Elijah’s interviews… for some reason I never seem to come across them. I have read most of Viggo’s interviews and a few of Orlando’s. I’m not going to admit how many pictures of Viggo I have both from movies and the real Viggo. I don’t save pictures of Orlando but I do look. I hardly look at pictures of Elijah.

So obviously I do best when I can just totally make it up as you are saying but that doesn’t stop me from throwing reality in. I’m positive that all of the reading I’ve done on Viggo is the cause that I prefer to make things more factual with him. So I see your point the more you read … the more you get caught up in them rather than the fictional them you might be trying to create.

So I guess I’ve babbled all this just to say yes I agree, but doing research isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

Thanks for the interesting comment; I'm fascinated at all the different ways people write.

I always research Viggorli more than Orlijah.

That's so interesting! Isn't it wonderful how out minds can have two different ways of tackling similar things?

doing research isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

Oh, I totally agree. The main reason I don't do much is because I don't have time. Slash is for fun with me, so I don't get too het up about it. :)
