I get the impression that the writers of Teen Wolf think Scott is the main character. This confuses me ( Read more... )

Well, he is the "Teen Wolf", there is no doubt about that, so of course you are right in that sense. But he's also the most uninteresting character on the show. Nice enough, but bland. And he doesn't really forward any of the plot strands, he just reacts.

Hmmm.

Okay, you make a good case and I can see how you'd read him that way.

That said, I'm still find the role lacking for the main character, because a) I think they've overdone Scott's indecisiveness, and and Allison and Stiles are going on much more interesting coming of age journeys, and b) while I love the theme of the group being stronger than the individual (it's very feminist), I really really loathe the idea that the solo hero has to save the day by bringing the pack together. A solo hero fundamentally undermines the strength-in-group theme, just to buy into the masculine paradigm of heroism. And yes, I know that's a core feature of these kinds of shows, even if they are queer friendly. But just YUCK times a bazillion. I'm so over it. I can't take that kind of heroism seriously ( ... )

I think that's where Scott's stupidity comes in - he may be the point of view character, but its very clear that his primary contribution is not his ability to infallibly save the day. He screws up as much as any other character (if not more). The group that is slowly growing is supposed to be based on trust, and that's Scott's journey - he is trying to learn what it is to be worthy of trust. If this was Captain Planet, Scott would be Heart. He's not the main character because he's a big damn hero (that's generally Stiles or Allison), it's because the thing he's struggling with is the key concept of the show.
Stiles already understands a lot of these things, which is one of the reasons he's such a fan favourite. I see his journey being about learning not to act on impulse so much, and then he'll have more successes to combat that self doubt.

*nods* Yeah, I think that's how it's meant to come across. But as Scot has some of the best and most trusting relationships going in to the show, I still maintain his quest is a bit thin and uninteresting. Mileage varying etc.

I agree - Scott is the main character in that the show tells his story, maybe title charater would be more accurate? . But he's not the driving force in his story very often, which I think is an accurate of average teenage experience. BUT he's surounded by some awesome, weired, freaky friends, and the sum total equals the hero.
