What a day of mixed news!
ETA:
Delicious Says It’s Not Shutting Down, but It’s Not Staying at Yahoo Either. Thanks to
polykleitos for the link. This is good news, but it's probably still worth backing up your data. This is actually confirmation that Yahoo has abandonned ship, even if Delicious does plan to find a way forward -- there might be some shaky times ahead. /eta
R.I.P. Delicious
So. Yahoo seems poised to do what everyone expected -- but hoped against hope they wouldn't -- with leaked news of the planned closure of
Delicious. Boo. Hiss. (If you're interested, you can sign the
Twitition in protest.)
Delicious was one of the early social bookmarking sites, and had heavy buy-in from fandom. It's been the chief way that I find fics, and make recs, for over a year now. It's a really readable, user-friendly service. I'll be sad to see it go.
Fortunately, I started backing-up my bookmarks on
Diigo, so I don't have to start completely from scratch. I did this not only so I'd have an alternate archive (I like backups!), but because Diigo has more grunt than Delicious in terms of being able to export data as LiveJournal posts and so forth. So I used Delicious for reading, and Diigo for bookmarking and blogrolling.
If you are wondering how to export and re-host your Delicious bookmarks, there are lots of options available to you -- not that they will replace our established fannish networks. :(
Over on Diigo, I've started a resource for fans affected by the closure. You don't need a Diigo account to access it, as it's open to all. It has two things:
- a collection of links to guides giving advice on alternatives to Delicous (Diigo is by no means the only option), and
- an open Group called Delicious Fandom to help people re-establish their fannish networks
You are all welcome to join, spread the word and add links to resources of interest, and generally use it to weather the change.
I'll be checking out other bookmarking sites myself, so I can back-up my Diigo data once Delicious closes. I'll let you know what I end up choosing.
And from the ridiculous to the sublime...
Lightworks Video Editor
Lightworks has gone into open beta! This is a high-class, professional editing suite, and you can now download it for free! You just have to create an account, which takes about 5 minutes, and doesn't require any particularly prying personal details.
http://www.lightworksbeta.com/ I've already installed it and had a very quick look. It's not at all intuitive -- it looks even harder than Sony Vegas. But it also looks like it might be even more powerful than Sony Vegas.
I'm kinda awed by it, actually. It looks like groups of computers can network together in order for multiple people to edit the same video. That's entirely speculation on my part, as I've barely played with it yet and couldn't figure much out in the few minutes I had free. I plan to try it out properly once I've finished my Festivid.
But wow. How fantastic.
Oh, and if you're interested in creating your own movies, there's a freebie Microsoft screen capture doodad I've been hearing good things about too:
Expression Encoder 4. I plan to try it out over the next few weeks.
Seriously, what a weird week for open source and user-generated content.
Have you heard of any other interesting things afoot? It seems like we're in the midst of a seachange.
