9. Danger Mouse/Penfold
I took a couple of days off there, you might have noticed. I was tired. But now, I am back!
Today's ship is an old favourite: DM and Penfold, who cracked me up as a kid. I especially loved the voice-overs, because they were so knowing and sly. But I also loved Penfold and his, "Oh, crumbs!" and DM and his cut-rate James Bondiness, and the way they held hands and whisked through danger. Naaaw.
Here's a bit of trivia for you: this pairing actually links up with one of the earlier ships I posted about. There was actually a kind of in-joke in Professionals fandom for a bit, in which Bodie and Doyle ended up on cases with Penfold and DM (for example: Werehamster of London by Debra Hicks). It was before my time -- I just saw the stories in the archive -- but I think it was an equivalent to the penguin thing in SGA. If any of you know more of the history behind this, please do enlighten us young and innocent fans. :)
Anyway, if you have no idea what the hell Danger Mouse is, here's an episode...
Aren't they adorable? Although, I have to add that I carefully picked that episode to avoid the most offensive aspects of the show. With my adult eyes, the cartoon is horribly sexist (there are no women at all!) and also racist. I really don't think I'm reading too much into Penfold being brown, and the sidekick, and chief bottle-washer, and always the butt of the joke. It's very disappointing to me when childhood favourites come up short like that. However, Penfold is also my favourite, so I still have a soft spot in my heart for the pairing.

I don't have many recs for this fandom. Just a songvid I love like burning... but it is sadly no longer online. It's "Groove is in the Heart" by frivolity65 if you are interested in trying to hunt it down.
Links, reminiscences, recs and cracky ficlets are all welcome. We could, literally, double the size of the fandom on this one post with a tiny amount of effort. Take the challenge!

PS: As an aside, on the Spuffy poll you actually chose pretty much the way I expected! I'm shocked. :) I do adore Spike and Buffy, and I love watching them, but let's face it, they are a disaster. So not voting for them as a couple? Makes total sense to me. Sometimes what makes a ship is the wreck, you know?
