Slashy Epiphany
A few years ago, I was talking with one of my buddies about slash, and she said that she goes through stages: when she first falls in love with a fandom, she craves first-time fics, and then after a while, she wants established relationship fics. I gave her the googly eyes upon hearing this, because I've always wanted first-time fics, and I couldn't conceive of ever getting tired of them.
*coffs*
It now occurs to me that I've always tended to move on from fandoms after a year or so, and that that might be a factor in never wanting anything but first-time fics. I've been permanently stuck in the "just dating" stage. Not that I'm tired of first-time fics now -- I still adore them. Especially in the fandoms I'm currently dabbling in, like Die Hard (oh, Matt and John, your love is so hard-core and age-gap challenged) and Ironman (why are there not a million Tony/Pepper/Captain America fics? Because if ever there was an OT3 waiting to happen, it would be that one. *craves*)
The reason for this realisation is that in the last few weeks, I've had an ever growing craving for marriage fics. It's like a little switch in my brain has flipped, and now all I can think is: "Right then. John and Rodney, you've been dating for four years now. Time to get hitched." It's not helping that there have recently been successful legal challenges to DADT, and California has re-instituted gay marriage.
Every story I think up lately is a marriage fic. I want to write them so badly. I want to read them even more, and I can't find enough of them. *craves to the power of a million*
This is especially ironic as I actually think marriage is a deeply problematic institution, founded on sexist, classist, homophobic and racist ideals.
My lizard brain, however, doesn't give a shit about that. It just wants John and Rodney to get married.
*dreams of embarrassing proposals, accidental marriages, action-packed honeymoons, kidfic and confetti*
What about all of you? Have your reading tastes changed over time, in terms of the types of stories you're looking for?
