LonelyHearts Atlantis: The Conclusion

Dec 07, 2005 19:53

You might remember that a few weeks ago, I started a writing experiment called LonelyHearts Atlantis. It was a live storytelling session, in which I posted short chapters of LonelyHearts on the fly in LiveJournal comments. It was pretty rough and ready, with lots of typos; and it was just the broad strokes of the tale, rather than a fully fleshed ( Read more... )

Thank you! I had a good time with this experiment, although I'm a little sad I've gone off the idea. I think, written up properly, it would have made an interestingly bittersweet romance.

That is...not the way I thought it was going to end, but I am still amused. By the LonelyHearts concept. And stuff. And I really hope I'm not going to be bitten by a plotbunny about that said concept, because I don't write fic >.

There's one aspect to this fic that I don't think came out very clearly in the "broad strokes" version: really, it's a tragedy with comic moments. So the final fic would have been quite brooding, and even grim in places, but then intercut with these bright moments of high comic relief, mostly centered around the exchanges on LonelyHearts. So the Ascension at the end would actually be kind of... it would be very clear that John would be damning himself. The funny bit with Rodney yelling at him would actually be this kind of black humour, because Rodney would have realised that John had *finally* managed to take a metaphorical bomb right into a Hive ship, and would never really be coming back (I mean, sure, Daniel does it all the time, but John really Ascended, not play!Ascended). And none of that came through without all the detail the story really demanded. But I'm glad you liked the experiment anyway.

Hmmm, I'm not sure about the John living the rest of his life as an ascended woman part but...

Hee! Only John could manage to do something like that anyway. And I can so totally picture Rodney's righteous indignation once he figures it out.

I like the stuff about John and Rodney not getting along during the day but being hot and heavy (unbeknownst to Rodney--heh) at night.

It was a fun experiment. Thanks for sharing!

No, I agree. I think he'd go back to the drawing board and figure out how to transform as a man. But the broad strokes version doesn't really allow that kind of subtlety to come through.

And I'm glad you enjoyed the experiment--I had good fun with it too (except for the hair-ripping part :)
