I won’t hurt you, little girls
For a moment
The sound of your voices
Like the rush of a noisy fan
The up turned ends of sentences
The lowered exaggeration
Were pathetic
I turned
Waited to look you in the eyes
Show you how young and small you really were
With a raised eyebrow and smirk
But
Right as you started to turn
Suddenly
Before a narrowness was formed
Just for a second
I saw it
With a flutter
Your doe-like movements
Shy, unsure
Glinted quietly under the surface
So brief, so real
And I was stopped
I saw myself
Remembered fourteen
And how I knew the constant fear
Of mean eyes
And laughing mouths once too
How pointed fingers hurt
I couldn’t stare at you
And think how silly you were
Not when I was that silly once too
That silly and sensitive
And close to aches
I realized
You are young
But still someones
Still soft and trying not to break
We all once knew you well
I will remember from now on
