Gah!

I've been using Visual C++ 6.0 Professional Edition to do my programming. No idea how much it cost me (would've been academic price from the Melbourne Uni Bookroom, IIRC).

If I want to upgrade to Visual Studio 2005 Professional Edition (upgrade as in less than the normal full price because I'm already a good little Microsoft consumer), normal retail price is apparantly just shy of $800, according to Microsoft's website (thankfully that is converted to $AUS, at least).

Seems like I can download the Express Edition of VC++ for free, but that would be without all the go-faster stripes, and with many of the go-normal-speed stripes deliberately mangled. But on the other paw, there is at least one stnank I know of in the VC++ 6.0 compiler that I know does not exist in the VC++ 2005 compiler. And the implementation of templates could not possibly be any worse in the newer version (though I do know of at least a few stnanks with templates in 6.0 that still are problems in 2005).

Sometime soon I will go see if academic price from the Melb Uni Bookroom would do me any better. And attempt to find out if I'm allowed to distribute and/or make money from products of Microsoft's compilers if I only have an academic license for them.

Le sigh.
