Fundraising

Past two weeks have been pretty hectic, but thankfully have gotten loads sorted. Have brushed up on Photoshop, learned InDesign, and am a good bit through training in Illustrator. So hopefully from there I'll be able to really push my skills forward. And, yay, census form is sorted.

Decent bit of work as well. Currently doing a cut and build for an awful looking site, but the pay is good, even if the design makes my head sore! Also have a pretty big project starting over the next day or two. Have to go through the functional spec and sort that out. Fingers crossed it won't be too complex. May have a nice mobile project to do as well, which Barry and I need to quote tonight.

Gah, head is a little fuzzy at the moment. Today has been one of those "finishing off loads of little elements" days, which, as there were so many of those little things, makes my brain a little muddled. But it's the normal "end of project" deal, which means the projects are almost sorted and I'll get some nice payments soon.

But, yeah, one of the major things this past week and a bit has been lots of organising for fundraising in regards to the Japanese Tsunami and Earthquake.

Last Wednesday, the JSNI (Japan Society of Northern Ireland) had a meeting that lasted until after 11pm, where we went through loads of plans of what we could do. We teamed up with the British Red Cross and were able to get two spots for events pretty quickly, one in a major shopping centre here, and the other in St. George's Market (the biggest market in the country).

I was only able to get to the event on Sunday at St. George's, but spent the earlier part of the week working on graphics for the events as well as making loads of paper cranes (our plan was basically giving paper cranes to people who donated). The St. George's event actually took place alongside the Festival of Colours/Holi celebration as Sumi, my Japanese teacher and another JSNI committee member, often helps out at international events and the woman organising this one, Nisha, asked if there was anything they could do to help with the situation in Japan.

So it was nice to be able to be there and enjoy the festivities alongside fundraising. But I swear I was hearing Indian music for the rest of the night as it was so loud :D Sumi wanted to go up and dance, but her kimono was too restrictive for it! But with the level of the music, I'm worried how well my Japanese came off to the members who are actually from Japan. I kept having to ask them to repeat what they were saying as I just couldn't hear. Though I was doing the same when we were speaking in English, so hopefully I didn't seem too bad! Thankfully they can all speak brilliant English, but then a lot are here as they are married to locals, so that's a given.

I was thinking of wearing the yukata that I have, but then realised I didn't have anything that resembled an obi, but luckily Sumi had brought down a number of hers. In about the space of two minutes, she had be dressed perfectly, including a gorgeous big bow.

We had boxes and bags of paper cranes, but they disappeared so quickly that we had to start making more there. My hands were really sore by the end of it!

Me again

There's another event on Saturday in another part of the country, so Sumi gave me a set of origami paper to make more cranes. Need to get started in hopes I have them for her in time for class on Saturday morning!

>_< Head still feels funny

EDIT: Wooooo! Just heard back from the JSNI. We made a total of £7,000 over the two events at the weekend! Yay, so much money for Japan!
