As I'm waiting around doing tutorials in work until I've got some stuff to do...
Mmm, Cowboy Bebop live-action movie.
I'm not really sure what I think about this. I'm not against remakes in the grand scheme of things, just that I don't think I've ever seen one match the original, especially when it comes to American ports of Chinese or Japanese cinema.
I'm not much into my horror movies, but even I can see the dozen or so remakes of that genres were just bad ideas.
I just really didn't like The Departed (despite having grand hopes with the director and all the actors other than Leo DiCaprio). The first half I was thinking, "thankfully they are playing this differently" and was pretty happy, but then the last half was just a rip-off in terms of everything, even down to camera angles and other forms of direction (I expected more of you, Scorsese). And Damon's character had an easier, less poetic comeuppance. As a whole, it just lost the tension of the original, I didn't give a shit if two moles lived or died, and the whole romantic sub-story took a lot of the thrill away from it. Whereas Infernal Affairs? I was sitting on the edge of my seat throughout and wanted them both to get what they wanted.
But, yes, Bebop. It makes me shudder when I see the likes of Speed Racer and Dragonball, and with Stoff makes me think this is going to yet again be another movie with Matrix fighting effects (something that should never be in a movie again because for a few years there that was all we bloody got and made something pretty fucking cool at first just look shit).
But then there's the A Scanner Darkly aspect, which makes me thing that perhaps with Bebop, they won't go for some shitty "live-action anime" style and just go for a good old proper sci-fi western. I mean Bebop is essentially Japan doing a show with all the cool elements of American culture with a little 70s Bruce Lee kung-fu thrown in, so hopefully they will forget trying to emulate anime and go for something more pure to what Bebop was.
...But then again, Fox (another thing that makes me shudder a little) already have something very, very close to the style and feel of Bebop. Firefly/Serenity. And I would much rather see another movie from that franchise than them port Bebop. What I would do for some more Firefly...
Well, it's being made, and rather than screaming "NOOOOO!!!" I might as well keep my fingers crossed that we get a good movie out of this. Same with the remake of Death Note (though I hope they go with the manga rather than a remake of the Japanese live-action movies as I really felt they were nothing more than average movies). If we have to have anime remakes, better series of that ilk as they are more suited to porting than the likes of Dragonball and Speed Racer.
