Well, the fates have conspired to force me into relinquishing my World of Warcraft account. I know that video games among the vast majority of people are something of a faux pas, but they've been a large feature in my life for the last 20 years, and giving up on one of my favorites is always a little hard.
I still like the game, it's just, it's become too dangerous to continue playing it. Over the past week, I've had my account hacked twice, likely through a key logger on one ofo my computers. Out of desperation and anger I suppose, the hackers locked me out of my hotmail account and hi-jacked my MSN password... All so that they could have the opportunity to strip my characters and sell the virtual proceeds for real money.
I guess I'm lucky they were only after imaginary pixels and not my bank account (although the damage has not been fully played out yet, so we'll see what happens), but the lesson is clear: certain online activities are simply too risky to continue and risk that cannot be managed must be eliminated. So, goodbye old friend, while I have enjoyed exploring your shores and depths, I can longer risk the dangers you present, so until another day, I take my leave.
