It's impossible to eradicate suffering. If you want to actually change something for the better, set realistic goals, and lessening suffering is certainly something to strive for. I agree that there are negative aspects of religion, but I think that it would be better (and more realistic) to try to lessen them, eventually eliminating them (if that's possible). Saying that religion is terrible is only increasing the hatred in the world and does not actually do anything. While some people may think that a law against killing is against their religion, this is a law that is beneficial for society. There can be other such laws. It's a tough path to go down, and it will be impossible to satisfy everyone, but passing laws against the more extreme/harmful aspects of religion would be better in decreasing suffering than doing nothing. [ex. Laws that give women more equal rights to men in countries where the religions may say otherwise]
If you tried to eliminate religion, you'd start a religious war. Religion will not just peacefully go away because of the "pathetic" people who are willing to sacrifice their lives for something they truly believe in.
Frankly, I'm shocked that you would post that last sentence.
It's incredibly arrogant and hypocritical of you to be so attacking against people who believe in God [so much for getting rid of suffering]. You're entitled to your own opinion, but there's really no precendent to offending other people if their views are different from your own. (Isn't this what you talk about in Leadership?)
