trying to understand my reaction

Jul 10, 2005 03:48

bohunk, who always has great LJ entries IMO, posted a link to a story about some hipsters who organized to dress up as zombies and attack a local LARP/SCA/D&D (duct taped swords) group.

[Sidenote: please write in a vote for the rat city rollergirls for best mac 'n' cheese on NWSource's popularity contest. I did!]

I'm going through my reaction to this story )

The next step is for the hipsters to decide that it was so much fun that they should meet in the park dressed as zombiesonce a month and call themselves HAZ (Hipsters as Zombies) and its so cool that hipsters in other cities decide to dress as zombies. Five years from now, a group of belltown yuppies decide to dress as ninjas to break up a HAZ meeting. They have such a great time they decide...

Even though dressing as zombies is exactly as lame as SCA (Or exactly as cool as SCA, personally I'm glad they exist and they make me smile every time I see them) those pictures are great. Everyone, SCA included, seemed to have a ball.

Isn't it funny that someone would see a group having realy fun and decide they should point out how stupid they are for having fun? It is not that they dressed as zombies and attacked SCA people that you are reacting against. It is the intention behind it.

NERDZ rule.

My experience with SCA'ers, both at the Faire and in college, was that there were quite a few extremely weird folks. There were also a lot, in fact many more, extremely normal people. To me, it's just another interesting hobby, and to them, probably the coolest hobby.

Yeah, here's what I think each group was thinking afterwards, and how they'll look back on it:

Hipster zombies: "Best day ever!" (we dressed up as zombies and attacked!)

SCA'ers: "Best day ever!" (we got to battle a horde of zombies!)

i just really really like the thought of dressing like zombies and messin' stuff up - whether for good or evil. but it should be done mostly for good.

i think the hipsters were secretly wishing they could join in so they made it all ironical.

I fucking hate those hipsters. Talk about unoriginal. I think they need to attack nerds cause the nerds can cut loose and have fun, something too obvious and lacking in social commentary for a hipster. You work in a cool coffee shop and you wear ironic clothing but no one's published your alt music zine yet have they? Nerds are nerdy but at least they're smart enough to contribute to society.

That being said - I love my hipster friends. Go to the Cha and talk about yourselves in an emotionless way and leave the rest of man-kind alone. They're not hip enough for you anyway.

Tee hee. I'm feelin' lippy today. Bring it on!
