[ private to Alexis | unhackable ]
Hey Alexis, your dad didn't come into work today. I checked the Hall as I passed, and he's there. I'm on my way to your apartment, okay? Bringing a couple pints of Very Cherry with extra chocolate sauce.

[ flagged to friends of Richard Castle | public ]Richard Castle has left the City. Yes, I checked. If anyone ( Read more... )

Mara, if anyone should be asking after anyone, it should be me after you. Are you still-- having trouble?

I'm not sleeping well, but I think I'm starting to get a handle on my powers again.

...Nightmares? I've seen some snippets of the reports. If you need to talk, I'm here.

Good, though, about the powers. Not that I really understand it, but if you say it's getting better, I'm glad.

Sometimes. Other times I think I'm just... waking up.

I'm sorry, I should have explained that better the other night. If you have questions, I can answer them.

I think I understand the feeling.

That's all right, you endured a horrible ordeal. I wouldn't mind hearing a little about it, when you're ready.

I'm a Reaper. Normally it means when a person's reached the point where they should die naturally, I can release them from their life painlessly. It's slightly more complicate than that, of course, but that's the gist of it.

But now that I'm... now that I'm dead, my power isn't working the way it should, I can't... turn it off. I'm afraid if someone touches me...

[Beckett has a hard time comprehending most things in the City that don't fall under her personal spectrum of normal. She's been working to accept more and more of it, and she really doesn't want to hurt Mara given their awkward relationship so far.]

That's why you're seeking distance, to make sure there's less of a chance... I'm really sorry you have to do that.

It's... tolerable. I'm usually more or less alone anyway, I'm a necessary part of my world's society but you can imagine... it doesn't lend itself to having a great many friends. My Scythe, or bodyguard, Garrett is my only one.

Well, I can imagine. You...kill people for a living. [Well, she had enough trouble accepting just voo doo. It was only a matter of time before she phrased it this way.] I can imagine it'd be very lonely.

I have a life, I go out and enjoy myself, I'm not unhappy per most people's definitions. Just... rather used to isolation.

I guess I can say I know the feeling. My job kind of rules my life, I don't really have much time for fun.

DO you take joy in your work?

Reply

cuffyoutwice March 13 2010, 04:55:45 UTC
Well. I don't know if you can call it joy. I investigate murders and try to put the person responsible away for their crimes. It's my duty, but if I didn't find worth in it, I wouldn't do it.

What about you? How-- do you like what you do?

Not especially. I'm glad I can fulfill this function and there are certainly worse things I could do with it.

But the act itself is... dangerous. Intruding. To be honest, I got to great lengths to forget about it when ever I can.

It sounds like it's really difficult for you. I'm assuming you didn't choose the work?

If you don't mind my asking: do you-- have you done your work here at all? I'm apologize if I'm being too forward, please stop me if you feel uncomfortable answering. I'm unfortunately sorely inexperienced with anything beyond the scope of hard facts. Maybe a downfall of being a detective...
