Summary: Spoilers for this last season’s finale. “This is a parent-like thing to do, isn’t it?”
Betty really had nothing against kids. Sure, they could be messy and loud and full of brutal honesty. But they had lots of good qualities, too, like-the way they-some of them- Well, when they’re smiling, they look really sweet.
“Aww,” Betty practically cooed as she watched Daniel Jr. climb across the monkey bars, a grin spread wide on his face. “He looks so sweet.”
“Yeah,” Daniel said vaguely, half-watching his son, half-glancing around the park, eyes darting about like a crazy person behind designer sunglasses. Betty had told him he’d have less of a chance of being recognized if he’d dressed down; but in her opinion, despite the Rolling Stones tee and jeans and baseball cap, he still looked like he belonged on the cover of GQ or something.
“Would you relax?” Betty swatted playfully at his arm.
“I am,” he said, unconvincingly. “I’m-relaxed.” He coughed a little, cleared his throat. “I just don’t want people to think that we’re, you know…” He trailed off and coughed again, raising his eyebrows suggestively when Betty gave him a puzzled look.
“Oh.” Scoffing, Betty rolled her eyes. “Trust me, Daniel, people won’t think that.” Look at me, look at you.
“Yeah, I guess you’re right.” Daniel chuckled carelessly and Betty valiantly ignored the faint, ugly, stabbing feeling somewhere in her chest.
Daniel Jr. let go of the bars and landed on his feet, taking only a second before running off to the swings. He snagged on, settled onto it, and looked pointedly at Daniel. He looked back, questioning.
“I think he wants you to push him,” Betty offered helpfully, nudging him forward.
“Oh, all right. Okay,” Daniel murmured, sounding a bit uneasy. He walked over to his son and stood behind him, giving a tentative push. Daniel Jr. spouted words of encouragement in French and the pushes grew firmer and the swing went higher and they were smiling. While his son was in the air, Daniel grinned at Betty. “This is a pretty parent-like thing to do, isn’t it?”
She laughed and assured him that it was, and then suddenly realized that, in a way, she was doing it with him. And that realization made her feel good. Too good.
“Um, Daniel? Maybe I should-go.”
The swinging stilled for a moment. Daniel Jr. looked at her, then looked at Daniel, then shook his head.
“No,” he said. “No.”
“Yeah, no,” Daniel agreed. “Stay, Betty. Aren’t you having fun?”
“Oh, loads.” Betty nervously adjusted her glasses. “I just thought-maybe-you two would rather-”
They just looked at her, man and boy, wanting her to stay, needing her, and it was definitely a parent-like thing to do-staying and swinging and laughing with them-but she was happy to do it.
