The first thing Kalifa learned as an assassin, was that she was not allowed to feel. If she cried when she saw a thin and sickly child, she should feign dust in her eye. And if she smiled when she felt the sun on her face, she better have a damn good reason. She had to drop her emotions quick, or she’d never make it.
She’s emptied her body of soft and tender feelings, of thoughts of warmth and woe, of regret. She’s managed to become as cold as an ice cap, as impenetrable as a boulder. But her secret luxury-her one guilty pleasure that she’d been able to hold onto for years-is physical gratification. She can’t let go of the satisfying feeling of skin against skin, so she allows herself that, if nothing else. So far it hasn’t gotten her into too much trouble.
And it helps, she finds, if the body she chooses to share her bed with at night is just as empty as her own. And there is no man that she knows of who is colder and emptier than Lucci. So it was no surprise to either of them, really, when they started to spend nights in each other’s company.
It really is a comfortable situation. He’s good with his fingers, good with his tongue, and he won’t fall for her. He can’t fall for her. It would be utterly impossible. Just the thought makes her chuckle. She sometimes thinks he’s better at their job than all of them combined. She knows that Rob Lucci would not only forsake his own heart, but he would rip it out and eat it, too. And he would certainly never ask for hers.
Sometimes when she’s bored, and she sees couples strolling together hand in hand, her mind lazily paints a picture of her-smiling and pink-cheeked-and Lucci, one arm around her shoulders and the other patting proudly at her bulging belly. Around them, a small boy and even smaller girl play with singing, red tie-wearing pigeons.
It’s ridiculous, and though she knows it’s ridiculous, she won’t tell Lucci about it. Because he’d probably kill her.
