Part Three
[October 10]

“Vivi?” Luffy’s eyes, normally so innocent and unguarded, were looking at her with concern and something else. Something like guilt. Something he didn’t want her to see. “What’s wrong?”

She feels like she’s going to cry. She hesitates and takes his hands. “I have something to tell you.”

“Princess?”

She opened her eyes, waking, almost, though she didn’t know if she’d been asleep or not. It was hard for her to relax these days. “Yes?”

“Is there something you want?” Paula asked, one hand holding a half-full pot of coffee, the other resting on her jutted out hip.

No one understood why Vivi went to the Spider’s Café for advice when there were plenty of people who were trained to do that sort of thing at the palace. They all still harbored understandable grudges against the ex-Baroque Works agents, so she didn’t try to explain it to them. How Paula was good now-as good as she could be, anyway-and understanding. And she always gave honest answers, unlike Igaram, who only said what he felt he should.

“Yes.” She straightened up on her stool and took her hands off the countertop so Paula couldn’t see the way she was wringing them. “I wanted to ask you about the flashforwards.”

Miss Valentine’s shrill voice sounded from the kitchen as she declared, “I’m not telling you what I saw!”

“Please,” Mr. 5 said from behind the newspaper he was reading. “No one cares that you were fingering yourself in the shower.”

“I’m going to kill you!”

Paula rolled her eyes and filled Vivi’s cup with sweet milky coffee. “Ignore them.”

Vivi had every intention of doing so; she just hoped she’d be able to get that image out of her head. “What do you think about them?”

“They’re stupid.”

“I meant the flashforwards.”

“Ah.” Paula set the pot down, her painted lips frowning thoughtfully. “Well, I think people may be blowing things out of proportion.”

“Really? But what if they saw-” (tears building up, about to fall, thumbs pressing into Luffy’s palms) “-something upsetting?”

“I think that what we saw was a possibility. A very likely one, perhaps, but still just a possibility. If you saw something that you don’t like, do what you can to make sure it doesn’t happen.”

“But…” Vivi bit her lip, looked down at her wringing hands. “What if you’re not sure?”

Paula sighed, sounding partly exasperated, partly sympathetic. “Hey. I only saw myself cleaning up the café, so what do I know?”

The boat, Zoro decided, had moved. He stood on the docks, studying the row of gently bobbing ships. Since the storm that had destroyed his own tiny vessel, he’d been island hopping by hitching rides with merchant ships, any pirate crews he could intimidate, and recently, fishing boats.

Earlier that morning, the fisherman had knocked on the door of Zoro’s room to tell him he was setting sail later, for a spring island. For a long while, Zoro stared up at the ceiling and thought about it (heavy snow falling outside a window) before gathering his things and paying for his room.

But he’d been at the docks for almost an hour and he didn’t see the damn ship. So he closed his eyes and followed the smell of fish.

Meanwhile, the fisherman watched and idly wondered why the green-haired swordsman was walking onto the ship of the Buggy Pirates.

“Hey, I’m taking one of the boats.”

Zeff glanced up from the blank piece of paper he’d been staring at for hours, and felt a wave of sentimentality, the kind that came with old age. He found himself thinking, quite suddenly, of the little curly-browed brat who turned his life into pineapple upside down cake. He wasn’t so little anymore, standing in the doorway with an air of impatience and need…

“If you’ve got a problem with it, you old geezer, you can stuff it.”

…but he was still a brat.

“Go ahead, boy.”

“I’ll be gone a while, so try not to miss me.”

Zeff almost told him then. Almost told him about his flashforward, almost told him what he saw, what he didn’t see. Just in case it meant something, meant anything at all.

Instead, he waved his hand dismissively and promised to pack some lunches since Sanji’s cooking was lousy.

“This is fucked up.”

Buggy laughed, sending unpleasant shivers down Zoro’s spine. “I told you! Destiny!”

While the Thousand Sunny sailed on for its new destination (Alabasta, kingdom of sand and heat and perfumed dancing girls), Luffy slept fitfully. His limbs were hanging out of his hammock and his brow was furrowed, and every now and then he opened his eyes and looked around and wondered what he was doing.

(And in the palace, Vivi did the same. She curled up under the bedcovers and slipped her hands up her nightgown so she could press them against her stomach, and she wondered how she could take control of her future if she didn’t know what she wanted to happen.)

And when they did sleep, they didn’t dream. They remembered what hadn’t happened yet.

She held his hands and felt like crying and he had something to tell her but he didn’t want to and he didn’t have to, because she spoke first.

“Luffy…you’re going to be a father.”
