Winnie the Pooh's tattoo

I don't post these often, but...why not? Written for an exercise in my creative writing class. We had to find a piece of artwork that spoke to us and write a poem about it. The artwork is "The Red Shirt Mystery" by Darlene Hamilton, a contract designer for Disney.

Winnie the Pooh’s tattoo

Hidden
beneath his favorite red shirt
(with the permanent honey stains),
on the warm and fuzzy yellow chest,
just above the beginnings
of a rumbly-tumbly stomach.

It’s an unnecessary secret.
The 100 Aker Wood itself
whispers their names
from the bee tree to the North Pole.
The littlest of Rabbit’s friends and relations
stops and listens
and is left wondering.

The idea was born
in the fluff of a bear,
but Christopher Robin did the stitching.
There was tickling
and the things that tickling
tends to lead to:
giggling and squirming
and a misplaced poke.
But when the deed was done,
both boy and bear were pleased.

As was Piglet,
though such a thing
hardly needs mentioning.
For quite a little creature,
he swelled with great importance
when Pooh lifted his shirt
and said, “You see, Piglet?
You’re on my heart.”
