Paige smiled up at the wide expanse of blue sky above her and stretched her legs out on the soft beach towel beneath her. “Mmm. Sun, sand, and…Snapple.” She giggled a little as she clinked her bottle against Alex’s. “This idea was…nearly perfect.”
Alex glanced at her, eyebrow arched. “Nearly perfect?”
Paige looked pointedly at the gang of shady-looking, beer-guzzling boys grouped around a cooler. Alex shrugged as if to say, what are you gonna do?
“It’s Jay’s car that got us here.”
“I know,” Paige said and looked away, determined to ignore him. “I’ll deal.” She closed her eyes for a moment and breathed deeply, inhaling salty air. She opened her them again in time to see Alex eyeing a girl standing in the water. “Please tell me you are not checking her out.”
Alex pursed her lips for a second, and then smiled, a bit, turning her head to face her. “All right,” she sighed. “What’s wrong with her?”
“Are you kidding me? She looks like she still has a myspace.”
Alex laughed lightly and shook her head. Paige drank from her Snapple bottle and decided to pretend that hadn’t happened. She was enjoying Alex too much to share her with some girl with a wet bikini clinging to her boobs and butt.
“What about her?”
Paige struggled to keep her expression cheerful as she followed her companion’s gaze to look at a girl in a thin tank top and a long, multi-colored skirt.
“Does she meet your approval?”
“No. She looks like she knows all the words to Bohemian Rhapsody.”
“That’s a bad thing?” Alex rolled her eyes. “Come on, Paige.”
“No, you come on,” Paige shot back, keeping her voice good-natured. “I can’t let you settle. If you’re going to be with someone, she has to be perfect.”
Alex looked at her, her lips forming a playful smile (not that Paige was looking at her lips), a few strands of dark hair falling into her face. “Well, I’m not going to find another you, Paige.”
Paige smirked back at her, trying not to worry about the way those words made her heart skip a beat. “That’s kind of a given, hon. I’m one of a kind. Irreplaceable.”
“Don’t I know it,” Alex murmured, and Paige really wished she hadn’t murmured because her lips always looked so pretty when she murmured (not that Paige was looking at her lips). And then she leaned in, and her dark hair brushed against Paige’s cheeks when she kissed her.
She hoped, briefly, that myspace girl and bohemian chick were watching. She knew Jay was, because he whistled, but she was still ignoring him. And then she stopped hoping and knowing anything other than the sun that she felt shining on her skin, the sand that her toes were curling into, and the Snapple that they both tasted like.
