Tatsuha first met her at his brother and Shuichi’s marriage ceremony. It was during one of the very rare moments of not having his eyes peeled to Ryuichi Sakuma, when he chanced upon catching a glimpse of her light blue kimono. She was standing under the cherry blossom tree. Her hair was pinned up, two ringlets framed her face. She was smiling broadly, watching Shuichi coax a grumbling Eiri into their first dance as newlyweds. She laughed lightly, and stopped when her gaze caught his.

“Oh, wow-you look just like him!” She paused and added, “Yuki-san, I mean. You’re his brother?”

He nodded, stepping closer and offering her the charming smile he saved for virgins and girls he labeled as “nice”.

“And you?”

“Sister of the groom. Or would he be the bride in this case?”

Tatsuha smirked.

“I think that depends on who you ask.”

She laughed again, her eyes closing with mirth. A cherry blossom fell, brushed against her ear and cheek on its path, landed on her shoulder. He reached out his hand, traced its path with his fingers, brushed it off.

He only looked at Ryuichi twice more the rest of the day.

Cherry blossoms follow them for the next year. She takes the train to Kyoto and drinks tea with him in the temple, out of Mika’s cherry blossom patterned cups. She uses cherry blossom shampoo and conditioner; she giggles when he buries his face in her hair and inhales. Her entire body flushes the pink color of cherry blossoms when she lies in bed with him on top of her, his hands traveling, smooth, down her legs and back up, to her thighs.

Eiri teases him when he hears Tatsuha’s stopped going to clubs every weekend.

“I know it’s not your schoolwork-” Here, Tatsuha snorts. “You could give a damn about that. And the old man gave up on your curfew years ago. So what’s stopping you?”

Her light laughter and pretty smile. Her soft, shiny hair and her deft fingers. Her accepting body. Her playful swat when he calls her “baby”. Her eyes’ wicked glint when she asks, “Isn’t this kind of illegal?”

“I hate cherry blossoms.”

“You can say that. But I can hear you smiling.”
