Summary: Future fic. A series of one-shots and drabbles following the progression of the relationship between Ryoutarou and Len, from feuding roommates to friends to lovers.
A/N: Someone just went to see Soul Men and needed a Motown fix…>.>
The bar was really for American tourists who wanted to feel more at home, but oddly enough, it was always crowded on Motown Night. It wasn’t exactly the place Len had imagined for their first night out as a couple, but Kahoko had been adamant about getting the gang together for something fun and he was willing to bet anything that Nami Amou had put the idea of karaoke in her head.
“You’re waiting for us to make fools of ourselves, aren’t you?” Ryoutarou asked over the sound of a rather laughable performance of “Let’s Get It On”.
“Not at all,” Nami assured, taking a sip of her drink and smirking at him. “But you are going to sing, aren’t you?”
“Just pretend you’re in the shower,” Len supplied. “I’m sure they’d love to hear your rendition of ‘Old Mc-’” He chuckled into the broad palm that clamped over his mouth.
The girls giggled (they seemed to find their relationship infinitely amusing and sweet, the silly things) and set their glasses down as the Marvin Gaye hit came to a close, and they headed for their stage, Kahoko and Nami coaxing Shouko along as they went.
“But you have to sing with me,” Hihara insisted, nudging Ryoutarou, who was shooting slightly exasperated looks at Shimizu, the younger boy having dozed off against his shoulder. “Yunoki says he has a cold.”
Yunoki coughed obligingly when glanced at, but winked when Hihara turned his head to watch as the girls began to sing “I Hear a Symphony”, which Len found highly appropriate, considering.
“I guess so,” Ryoutarou conceded, looking at Len as if he expected the violinist to protest. When he didn’t, the pianist smiled slightly. “You want me to sing to you, don’t you?”
Len rolled his eyes, though in a fond manner, and didn’t deem the question worthy of a verbal answer.
“Whenever you’re near, I hear a symphony play sweet and tenderly every time your lips meet mine”
The girls swayed to the music as they sang and Len noticed the way Hihara watched them, watched Kahoko, transfixed with a faint blush staining his cheeks. “Being abroad was nice,” he said after a moment, without looking away, “but I’m…glad I came home. While I was gone, I never once met another girl like…” He didn’t finish; he seemed to know he didn’t need to. He clapped louder than the rest of them when the girls finished, but was gone from the table before they could return; “We need them for backup!”
Ryoutarou gently shrugged Shimizu off and followed; the golden-haired cellist yawned, blearily opening his eyes for a brief moment, before simply moving over and leaning on Len instead. Len sighed and wondered how-if-the boy had managed to make it through his university classes.
As the girls rearranged to make room for the guys on the small stage, Yunoki asked, “You aren’t embarrassed?”
“No,” Len sort-of-lied. But he shortly admitted, “Perhaps this wasn’t the best night to announce our relationship.”
Yunoki tittered while a Smokey Robinson tune started to play. “Hino-san had already told me.”
That didn’t shock Len. Kahoko was a nice girl, but she wasn’t terribly good at keeping secrets. Nami Amou was a bad influence. He watched the group on stage with a perfectly mastered expression of disinterest; Ryoutarou was leaving the first verse to Hihara, concentrating instead on following the trumpeter’s fairly simple footwork.
“I was surprised when I heard,” Yunoki continued and Len glanced at him. “The animosity between you two was palpable, always. But…”
“But if you feel like loving me, if you got the notion, I second that emotion”
“…you go very well together.”
“Said, if you feel like giving me a lifetime of devotion”
“Yes?” Len found himself unable to speak above what was almost a whisper. His eyes were held by Ryoutarou’s gaze as he sang; it wasn’t the prettiest sound ever, but it was better than his shower-singing, and it did something to him, did something to make his heart swell and his throat tighten. “I think so, too.”
