“You’re Nobody Till Somebody Loves You” ~ Frank Sinatra [2:43] [Season 1; Nathan/Haley]
Nathan loved to hear the cheering of his name. He would shoot the winning basket and the crowd would scream, would applaud, would rush onto the court to congratulate him. To admire and adore him. To worship him.
He used to think there was nothing better.
And then he got a 90 on a math test.
“Nathan,” Haley said-one girl, one voice, and it was more of a happy gasp than a cheer. “Oh, I’m so proud of you!”
Nathan grinned as she threw her arms around his neck, and he realized that this was better. This was better than everything, anything. She was so much better.
“What about Love” ~ Heart [3:43] [Pre-Series; Nathan/Peyton]
“Nathan…” Peyton sighs, but it isn’t the type of sigh he wants to hear. Not now. “What is this?”
He somehow manages to keep from rolling his eyes as he tongues her hardening nipple. He hates that she has to do this now, when there are activities much more pleasurable to be indulging in. He sucks her nipple into his mouth, holds it between his teeth, but all she does is pull painfully at his hair.
“Nathan.”
“What?” He snaps, lifting his head. “Look, Peyt, it’s-it’s just you and me, all right?”
“Is that all?”
He frowns. “Can’t this wait?”
“I’m sorry,” she says dryly, cutting her eyes at him, “but if I’m going to have to wait for blood to reach your brain instead of your dick, I’m never going to get an answer.”
Well, that’s hardly fair. And what does she expect him to say, anyway? That it’s love? Sure, he could say that, but he’d be lying, and she’d know, and she’d get all pissed off and bitchy, and why would she want that? He certainly doesn’t. He just wants her. She’s supposed to want him, too. She’s supposed to understand.
“This, Peyton,” he says, motioning to her naked chest, “this is sex. And you suck at it.”
She pushes him off and tugs her shirt on as she walks out of his room, leaving him hard and sulking on his bed. But whatever; at least she’s not asking anymore questions.
“Uptown Girl” ~ Westlife [3:07] [Pre-series or early season 1; Nathan/Brooke, based on the video of them revealed in season 4]
It made sense, he realized somewhere in his booze-addled mind. Him and her. Her and him.
“Unh, Nathan,” Brooke groaned as Nathan’s hands spread her legs open.
Jock. Cheerleader. And she was more of a cheerleader than Peyton was. And she liked sex.
“Come on!” Brooke urged as her fingernails clawed at Nathan’s back.
She really liked sex.
“Yes,” Brooke gasped, head falling back, as Nathan rocked his hips and thrust inside.
Rich girl. Rich boy. It made sense. It felt good. Maybe it was how things should be.
But in the morning, when they redressed and looked each other over, the first thing Nathan said was, “This was a one-time thing, right? So let’s keep it between us.”
“Duh,” she said, rolling her eyes and applying lipstick. “I’m not an idiot.” She looked at him, red lips pursed. “It would never work out, lover.”
He half-scoffed, half-chuckled. “Tell me something I don’t know.”
She nodded and almost smirked, but when their eyes met, they knew they weren’t fooling themselves, or each other.
At least they’d always have the video.
“If I Had a Million Dollars” ~ Barenaked Ladies [4:27] [Season 1; Nathan/Haley]
They sat on the floor of his apartment, eating ramen noodles, and suddenly, he felt poor.
“Maybe I should’ve stayed with one of them.”
“How can you say that?” Haley paused as she swallowed her noodles; though Nathan thought it was kinda cute when she talked with her mouth full. “They were driving you mad, and now you’re finally free of them and their-their web of Crazy.”
“But if I’d stayed, we wouldn’t have to do this, you know?” He motioned with his fork to the noodles, to the floor. “We could go out somewhere, somewhere nice and expensive. We could rent a suite in some extravagant hotel-just because we could-and order room service.”
“Nathan…”
“I could buy you-so much stuff, Hales.”
“I don’t need stuff, Nathan.” She set down her bowl and crawled over to him, taking his face in her hands and kissing his cheeks, his chin, his nose, his forehead. “I just need you.”
His bowl joined hers on the floor as he pulled her close, pulled her into his lap, kissing her hard, leaving her breathless when he pulled away so his mouth could find purchase on her neck.
“I need you, too, Hales,” he murmured into her skin, his hands gripping her waist. “Just you.”
“Oh, Nathan.” She pulled his head back up for a kiss. “I love you,” she whispered against his lips and he saw that love in her eyes, he felt her shiver in his arms, and he found himself hoping that this would be… “But I still won’t sleep with you yet,” she said, and she giggled at the exasperated look on his face. “Maybe if you were still rich.”
“Why, you…” He grinned and soon he had her on her back, tickling fingers all over her as she laughed until she cried, and it wasn’t sex, and he wasn’t rich, and still, it was perfect.
“So Happy” ~ Into the Woods soundtrack [3:49] [Season 6; Nathan/Haley + Jamie]
They see him off at the airport, all smiling faces and encouragement.
“You’ll be in the NBA, NBA, NBA,” Jamie chants excitedly, his eyes big and awestruck and admiring.
“Don’t go forgetting me already, 23,” Haley teases, her smile sweet and loving and supportive.
As he hugs his son and kisses his wife, he can’t remember the last time he’s felt such joy. This offer could be the beginning of something wonderful. He could play again, finally, could be a star again, could hear crowds cheering his name again.
He’s needed something good to happen. After the bar fight, after the nanny fiasco, after his mother’s antics, after Quentin’s death, he’s needed something good. And now he’s going to get it.
He knows he probably looks like an idiot, boarding the plane with a goofy grin that’s too big for his face, but he doesn’t care. And he doesn’t care when he ends up sitting beside a chatterbox; and he doesn’t care that his ears pop when the plane ascends; and he doesn’t care that he has the aisle seat, so the stewardess’ cart constantly bumps his elbow.
Because he’s happy. So happy. So happy it almost hurts. And he’s missed being this happy. And he hopes he’ll never have to miss it ever again.
