Summary: The Seguchi daughter is one stubborn baby.

“Smile for me, baby girl!”
Eiri watched with faint bemusement as Shuichi attempted to coo at the little infant squirming in her crib. The baby had been nothing but contrary and difficult since her first breath of hospital air; Eiri hadn’t expected anything else, really. Not with the lethal combination of stubborn Uesugi and ruthless Seguchi blood coursing through her veins.

“C’mon, honey,” Shuichi urged. “Just one, little smile!”

“Give it up, kid,” Eiri said, placing an unlit cigarette between his lips. Mika wouldn’t let him smoke in the baby’s room; for him, though, the illusion of smoking was still almost as satisfying. “You’re not getting a smile out of that thing.”

“Don’t call her a thing,” Shuichi admonished. He waited a few more, fruitless moments before lowering the camera with a sigh. “Looks like we caught her on one of her bad days.”

“Maybe she just doesn’t like you.”

Shuichi stuck his tongue out at him and the writer gave him a charming wink in return.

“Don’t be mean; of course she likes me.” Shuichi cooed again, reaching down to tickle the baby, “You love your Uncle Shuichi, don’t you?” She wriggled and gurgled under his touch, but that was all. “You’re bound and determined not to give me a smile, aren’t you?”

Eiri chuckled, earning a light swat in reprimand as Shuichi left the cradle’s side and settled himself on Eiri’s lap, slinging his arms around the writer’s shoulders. Eiri held him loosely, reaching up to tousle the singer’s freshly-dyed pink hair.

“Maybe she’s freaked out by your hair, thinks you’re some kind of giant stick of cotton candy.”

“Shut up.” Shuichi smiled, despite the jab, and kissed him, lightly, on the nose.

“Don’t do that.”

“Let’s make a baby.”

“That better be a bad joke.”

Shuichi giggled and kissed him again.

“I said, don’t-”

“You like babies.”

“I do not.”

“You do.” Shuichi nodded toward the crib. “You like that baby.”

“She’s different.”

“You like Riku.”

“He’s not a baby.”

“You don’t want me to carry our love-child?” Shuichi asked, managing to look genuinely hurt.

“You-” Eiri shook his head in vaguely exasperated disbelief. “You’re seriously delusional.”

“Maybe.” Shuichi moved to kiss him again and Eiri lifted his head to catch his lover’s lips with his own; Eiri felt him grinning into the kiss. “Mmm…” Shuichi pulled away and brought the camera to his twinkling eyes, murmuring, “Smile for me?”

Eiri frowned on instinct; his heart tripped at the way Shuichi asked him, and that was not good.

“C’mon…” Shuichi coaxed, his free hand slipping down the back of the writer’s shirt to rub flirtatiously between his shoulder blades. “I know you can. Just one, little smile?”

And Eiri almost did it. He almost smiled. Just because…well, it couldn’t really hurt, could it? After all, he’d allowed himself to give the brat far more than just a smile…

But Mika called for Shuichi from the kitchen, said his cell phone was ringing. So Shuichi shrugged, planted another annoying kiss on Eiri’s nose, and dropped the camera onto his lap as he hopped up and skipped out of the room. Eiri picked up the camera and, after a few minutes of instinctive sucking on his unlit cigarette, he stood and walked over to the crib. The baby was quiet, still squirming slightly, and he watched her for a while. And then he lifted the camera.

“Say cheese,” he said, half-hearted.

And she stilled; she opened her big, baby eyes; and she gave him one, little smile.

Momentarily stunned, it took Eiri a few seconds to take the picture. After he did, he smirked, reaching into the crib and letting her tiny hand grasp his fingers.

“Good girl,” he whispered, and she smiled wider.
