Yesterday, after a semi-non-productive day of TV and a disappointing mall, I met up again with my good friend Joe, and my new good friend, Colleen. We once again attempted dinner at Takahashi, only to be greeted once again by a large CLOSED sign in the window. Crapping hell.
In our frenzied state of low blood sugar, we chose a second Japanese restaurant that looked nice enough. We gorged ourselves on tempura, sushi, rice and green tea ice cream. I tipped Colleen off about how to order Monkey-style, veggie tempura appetizer, side of rice, fried tofu (not the good way New York does it however) and a veggie roll.
We were the last patrons to vacate the premises, because we talked just as much as we ate. Above is angry-faced Joe at dinner. He's never mean, though. He just plays one on television.
We stopped by the Village Idiot and bought an entire pie. I couldn't resist. The chocolate French Silk is my favorite, and there is no comparison in New York.
We went back to my room at the hotel and Colleen treated us both to an amazing 40 minute concert of her violin. She started playing at 6, and is of professional caliber. I kept applauding after every song. She played classical, folk music, and even some American traditional fiddling, which was absolute heaven to listen to. For my benefit, she played Turkey in the Straw, and Joe sang along with lyrics consisting primarily of the phrase, "Silkie chickens dancing!" It was one of the best times I've ever had in Portland. No one ever knocked on the door and told us to keep it down, but we politely ended it at ten. Poor Colleen had probably had enough by then anyway.
Then it was time for some pie-cutting. I still half half of it in my mini fridge. I'll just have to sneak it in past Dad. He's a diabetic sugar junkie and I could easily find him passed out on the floor, face covered in the remains of French Silk.
Afterward, I walked Joe and Colleen downstairs to their car to bid them a sad farewell. It was especially difficult, because they are both so much fun. They would be perfect friends for us, as they hate going out too. Videos and the anti-social hermit life Monkey and I enjoy is their way also. Good God, they even watch wrestling. How much better can you get than that I ask?
Sadly, Joe and Coleen, I bid you both farewell. I will really miss you. You owe Joe's mom a trip out to Nassau, anyway. We're less than 5 miles from her. Hint, hint.
