„Lisa, this is not what I meant…” Hugh followed her, slowly enough not to arouse suspicions but fast enough to catch her. “I just wanted to talk and straighten things up between us. Hey. “ He delicately caught her hand to stop her. She did, but she couldn’t force her head to turn and her eyes to look at him right now. “I missed you.” He said lowering his voice again.
‘Stop it please” she looked at him and freed her hand from his grip. “This is not the place and you’ve said enough.” She said and run through the crowd, straight to the reception desk. She civilly ask for the keys to her room and one of the bellhops helped her to find the way. When she got there, she shut the door behind herself and sat on a huge bed, hiding her face in hands. The only thing she wanted to do was breathe, but even that seemed to be too hard. She was too tired of waiting for the man she loved, too tired of fighting with her own feelings for him, and now himself. She was sitting like that, with a mess in her head when she finally caught her breath and calmed down a little. After a few minutes she went to the bathroom and amended her makeup, ready to go back to the party.
“We were looking for you everywhere!” Where have you been?” Robert shouted as she walked down the stairs and Olivia gave her a kiss on the cheek. Hugh was standing right behind him and their eyes met for a second.
“How are you?” Lisa forced a big smile on her face, addressing to younger woman, trying to ignore Hugh.
“I’m great, I was looking for you because some of my friends want to meet you, c’mon” Olivia took her by the hand and lead at the other side of the hall. As the two men got alone, Robert turned to Hugh.
“What’s going on?” he asked.
“Nothing is going on.” He answered avoiding his friend’s look.
“May I say something then?”
“Sure…”
“You shouldn’t treat her that way…” Robert said as his friend give him an angry look which turned into a sad one as he realized that maybe the younger man is right. “She really likes you, you know each other for a long time, and you shouldn’t attack her because you can’t deal with your own feelings. I can see how you two looked at each other just a second ago.” Robert continue.
“So... what do you think I should do…?” Hugh asked shyly and hung his head, didn’t try to deny Robert’s words.
“You have all night, give her some time now and try to talk to her.” He advised, and Hugh nodded in agreement.
The night was passing by, when it became dark everybody left the sober and boring part of the party and went dancing having a great time. Robert had to go home already as he promised his wife but Olivia and Lisa were pushing the boat out. Hugh, in turn, was standing beside, talking to some guy, just sometimes glimpsed at Lisa.
“I forgot to tell her how beautiful she looks tonight…” he thought, ignoring his interlocutor, as the DJ slowed down the tempo of the music… „Maybe it’s the right time to talk...” he put his drink aside he started to walk toward her. Unfortunately in the last moment one of Olivia’s friends bit him to ask her to dance. He stopped on a dime and was watching as other man was slowly touching her hand and her waist. Hugh bit his lip and turned around, coming back for his drink. After having a couple by both Lisa and Hugh, DJ slowed down the music again and this time Hugh decided not to waste his time.
“Shall we dance?” he smiled shyly, reaching his hand toward her in welcoming gesture, and she could actually barely see his face because of surrounding them dark. She agreed by putting her hand in his as his fingers tightened on it. He put his other hand on her back and slowly moved her closer to him, but not too close.
“Can we try to talk again..?” he asked bending his lips over her ear so she could hear him despite the music.
“Later…” she came even closer to him and put her hand on his chest feeling his fast heart beating.
He was surprised how good he felt having her in his arms. He knew her and she knew him like no one else, they trusted and felt comfortable around each other. Sometimes too comfortable…
“I’m sorry, I’m tired, I think I’m gonna go upstairs…” her words shook him awake from his thoughts as she took her hands away from his.
“Fine. Let me walk you to your room.” He proposed and let her go before him.
As they reached the room, he helped her with the keys and opened the door letting her walk in first. He closed the door behind him, as she sat on the bed and started to take her heels off. He put the keys down on the nightstand and sat next to her. Noticing her travails with a strap, Hugh gently touched her leg and lifted, putting on his lap so he could help her with it.
“You don’t have to do this, I can…” she almost whispered as he disrupted her.
“I don’t have to, but I want to” he looked at her and smiled, taking her other leg and remove another shoe.
“I thought you wanted to talk…” she said, putting her legs back on the floor, turning her body on the bed to face him.
“It can wait, we had enough “talk” today I think… You should go to sleep now.” He nodded at her and stood up from the bed. He was walking to the door and when he put his hand on the handle she stopped him.
“Could you… stay with me tonight? I don’t feel so safe sleeping all alone in new places… If you can or only if you want to, of course…”
“Sure” he turned his head to her with his fingers still holding the handle.
