My spouse had surgery to correct a detached retina on Thursday. He'd noticed a big black spot on Friday and called Wednesday. They had him come in immediately and scheduled surgery for the next day! Turns out he had two holes, not just one. The aftermath is that we had to rent* this chair contraption that holds his head facing down. It's like a massage table face holder. The rest of it looks like a backwards chair. He has to keep his head facing down at all times. They give you a special mirror to put on the tray table in front of you that allows you to see, for watching TV, etc. There's also another contraption for the bed to hold his head. He can't sleep in it but there's too big a risk of him turning over onto his back (as the doc said,"it's all over". I don't know what that means).
He's been pretty good about it. Although he can't sleep so he's exhausted, plus his eye hurts like a sonovabitch. I've been doing a fair amount of fetching and carrying but it's okay, he deserves it. He's only allowed to walk around the block but he's too tired and wobbly. I want to teach him to use a cane, but pride is keeping him from it.
We've gotten food delivered two nights in a row. Last night Chinese, tonight he got a Greek salad and spinach pie, I got pancakes and eggs. We also asked for a lot of the plastic straws they use at the diner which will make drinking without tipping his head back easier.
With any luck he'll be able to be up and around by next weekend. Keep your fingers crossed!
