Player type

I have recently joined a gaming group on Wednesday nights at Richmond Comix. Just for the record this is Dungeons & Dragons 4th ed. I'm talking about here. Now, somehow I have come to be identified as the group's tactician. Anyone who has gamed w/ me in the past knows that I am not a brilliant tactician. I generally depend on other players for my tactics. I AM however the oldest player in the party and noticed that the party while acting toward a common goal was acting less like a team or more like a group of individuals who happened to want the same thing. It should be noted that while my suggestions have been noted, and half appreciated they haven't all been followed. E.g. when we faced the big bad of the previous adventure they did not heed my advice of focussed fire. Granted that was because the evil wizard's henchlizards were doing THEIR job of keeping the rest of the party distracted. It should be noted at this point that the party was made up exclusively of strikers except for me playing a token controller (i.e. the party's wizard), and I was hitting him w/ everything I had. It wasn't long before he took notice and decided that I was the first opponent that needed to die... and so I did.
Now we're started a new adventure w/ whole new PCs and even three new players. The party is composed of three controllers, two defenders, and a leader w/ NO strikers just for contrast. Now we're all level one and the first encounter was a cake walk. We had to defend some settlers' pack horses from stirges. We succeeded and all horses lived. Admittedly I had little to do w/ this and may have even been responsible for us being poorly set-up for the encounter in the first place. Hopefully I can learn from my mistakes.
