She got in!

My phone rings on my way home. My daughter was on the other line. K sounded a bit down. She said "do you remember that test last December?" How could I not remember, it is only the most important test in her middle school life!? The test was for the Science and Technology Program in Maryland, one of the best not just in the state but in the country. Kids who go to the program have 100% college acceptance rate in fields that involve problem-solving skills. There are many students who take the test in the county but they shave off more than 90% of applicants. I had her review for it for almost a month. Since there is really no reviewers available, we had to get reviewers from different tests such as the Catholic School Entrance Exam, which was heavy on the reading and comprehension part. The Science and Tech Program test was not. It was instead heavy on verbal reasoning (e.g., this is to that as that is to another) and math. I said "did you get your letter?" She sounded like she was about to burst into tears "yeah, I didn't get in." There was a long silence. I tried to sound reassuring "It's ok. There's always biomed program at the other school." Then K started laughing..."naaah, I'm just kididng. I got in!" Then it was my turn to almost burst into tears. I was so proud of her. I can't remember exactly what I said after but I was driving faster to get home quicker.

Getting in is just the beginning, I told her later. Her study habits have to be more disciplined and focused. This program is better than any private schooling anywhere in the state or even among the tristate. This is just the first step to the long journey to whatever she wants to do.
