A year after the events of Kirsty Cotton's life before hand; she now lives in a rent controlled apartment and is trying to hold a steady job. She has supressed all the memories of anything bad that happened in the past with her father, Frank, and Julia.
She was out living a new life working at a local grocery store, as a clerk, making new friends and finding a place to fit in with the community around her. There wasn't even a drop of the essence that once surrounded her. In her mind it was as if nothing had happened at all. She was all her own person without attatchment to anyone.
At the same time, she was bored with life. She wasn't in the most exciting place and the people around her didn't really spark her interest. It was all kind of plain. So plain that it made her feel plain. She hated this feeling, just standing there behind a cash register waiting for customers that had nothing real to say. She stood leaned over the counter, her face in the palm of her hand staring blankley at old people walking around the store.
"Hi, Kirsty!" The excited small voice snapped Kirsty out of realm. She stood straight up and saw the tiny blond girl she once knew from the mental hospital. She was surprised at first, with her mouth wide open. She had to say something.
"Wow... Hi. I haven't seen you in ages. Wow. How are you?" Kirsty smiled but still had the hint of confusion on her face. It had only been a year since the last time she saw Tiffany, but it felt much longer.
"I'm good. Better than I have been before." Tiffany spoke more than before, but she still had a quiet sound to her.
Kirsty smiled, knowingly, "What are you doing around here?"
"I was on my way to pick up some goods for a party tonight-"
Kirsty had to cut her off. This wasn't the Tiffany she knew anymore. She was much more different than she sounded. Tiffany never spoke to anyone, barely even to her. Only after a year of passing, she was going out to party?
"A party? What kind of party?" Kirsty still kept her sly grin of interest; she was overly curious about this new Tiffany.
Tiffany was thrown off guard, "Just me and some friends. Not really a party.. more like a gathering." The gathering part really sparked Kirsty's attention and it showed through her facial expression of excitement. Having once been a great listener, Tiffany picked up on this, "Do you wanna go?" She seemed kind of concerned with Kirsty's enthusiasm.
Kirsty gave it some thought. She knew how she came off and she felt self-concious about it. It wasn't her place to self-invite and she knew she was half way in over her head now. On the other hand... she was extremely bored.
"It's tonight?" Kirsty inquired. Tiffany nodded in her normal silent way. "Well, I get off at five.. where is it?"
"If you want to go, we can come pick you" Tiffany gave a small smile. "I have to get some things, I'll see you at five, okay?" Kirsty smiled back and waved good-bye.
She spent the rest of her work day happyly looking forward to the night ahead of her. She smiled at every one of her customers, what little she had, from that point on. Something intriguing was finally going to happen tonigiht.
Around five o' clock, Kirsty was out in front of the store, eagerly waiting for her ride. She stood there, waddling around, and fidgeting like mad. She felt like she was getting too excited and looked down at her watch. It was already five fifteen; where were they? Kirsty decided to stop being a fool and sit down on the curb; letting the patience over come her.
As soon as she sat down, there they were in a rusty broken down car. She looked up at it oddly; she was expecting something at least a little nicer than this. Tiffany waved from the passenger seat, and Kirsty smiled getting to her feet. She hopped in the back seat of the car and threw down her work vest next to her. The door had to be slammed shut, because it didn't close all the way the first time. She looked around the inside of the car. There were tears in the seats and scratches on the windows. "What kind of person owns a car like this?" She thought to herself as they were pulling out of the parking lot.
Driving down the road, the three girls all made the normal casual conversation. Eventually, Tiffany got Kirsty caught up with what all had happened since they'd last seen each other. They never once reminicesed. They treated it like they had gone to highschool together and were on their way to a reunion of sort. They especially never told the third party girl how they met. They both knew they had to make everything seem normal - after all, the last time Kirsty had opened her mouth about the truth, she got locked away.
They finally arrived at the house around seven. It was already dark outside and Kirsty began to wonder how long she was going to be in a place she wasn't really comfortable with. Sure, in her mind this was something she had been looking forward to, but actually getting there made her some what nervous.
Kirsty followed the two girls into the house. It was large and had two stories and in the dark it kind of looked morbid. The two girls were giggling their way inside while Kirsty was turning to madness. This wasn't the kind of place she trusted. It looked extremely familiar, but in the dark, she couldn't tell if she had been there before.
Her first step in the door, the lights shown everything in her near sight and she recognized it immeadiatly.
"Oh my god.." She said to herself. Tiffany looked back at her, concerned. Everyone else was already having fun and Kirsty looked like she was in hell all of sudden.
"What's wrong?" Tiffany asked, unware and confused to Kirsty's reaction to the inside of the house. Kirsty looked around to make sure it was really it. She held her breath; her eyes beginning to well. Tiffany grabbed her arm, "Kirsty, what's wrong??" Tiffany could sense the fear boiling inside Kirsty's eyes. She shook Kirsty out of her daze.
Looking down at the floor, she murmored "..This was my father's house." Tiffany leaned down to see her face. Kirsty's expression was completely distrought and upset. Tiffany could hear her seething. Behind them in the front room the other girls noticed. Tiffany looked over her shoulder to see them and rolled her eyes.
"Let's go outside. Maybe you'll feel better being outside the house." Tiffany took Kirsty's hand and led her out the front door.
They sat down on the stairs out front. Kirsty sat down with her head in her hands. Tiffany put her hand on her shoulder.
"I really didn't know. If I did-" Kirsty looked up at Tiffany.
"I know there was no way of you knowing about this. It's my fault for not saying something."
"Maybe it's my fault for letting you go?" Tiffany started feel regret for bringing Kirsty into this.
"No." Kirsty cired softly, still looking down. "We both thought it would be better. Remember?" Kirsty looked up at Tiffany, angrily whiping her eyes. Tiffany nodded and brushed back Kirsty's hair. Kirsty caught her breath, remaining calm. "I'm not as upset as I look, I just... I was looking forward to this all day and I built up in my head that it would turn out great.. but as soon as I got out of that car I could feel something wrong." She looked at Tiffany, searching her eyes to see if she understood. She sighed and looked away.
Tiffany was concerned, but she couldn't feel what Kirsty was feeling and that bothered her.
"I'm not the most optimistic person, but I really don't think anything bad is going to happen tonight." Kirsty agreed to this and felt she was just over reacting to the odd coincidence.
"I just wasn't expecting this. After everything that went on in there... it's hard to even believe that it looks the same." Kirsty shook her head, still with some doubt in mind.
"Karen said her dad fixed up the place." Tiffany said as they slowly headed back towards a regular conversation. Kirsty perked up, though. She blinked her eyes in realization.
"I don't know why.. but something in me wanted to think that it wasn't real. Now I know." Kirsty sat up straight, discerning it. She looked longingly at the tree across the street she had stood by before. Tiffany put her hand on her shoulder and layed her head over it, snuggling up to Kirsty.
"I always knew it was real." She said, looking up at Kirsty from the side. Kirsty smiled at last.
"Let's go back inside. I think I'll be able to handle it." Tiffany and Kirsty helped each other up and went back up the stairs into the front door of the house.
Inside there were two other girls who were all holding something. They were gathered in a circle; Kirsty could only see some of it. Tiffany led her by the hand to the group in the kitchen. Kirsty winced for a moment, she had a flash of a memory. The dirty kitchen crawling with maggots that she hated so much. Everything that was so horrible about the place was all coming back to her but she tried her best to shake it off. Before she knew it, she was standing in the circle with the other girls.
She looked around herself with wide eyes. They were all holding hands around a small fire. Kirsty immeadiatly started trembling and Tiffany felt it. Tiffany looked to her side, a bit worried again. Kirsty opened her mouth but she couldn't find the words. Instead she dropped hands with everyone around her. She was breathing heavily and looking at all of them. Their faces blurred together into one ghoulish image. She fell back a few steps, causing Tiffany to turn around and look at her in concern.
"Kirsty, what is it?" Tiffany sounded slightly aggitated but she had thought this was no longer a problem. Kirsty just stood there standing outside the circle, staring at Tiffany's hand still holding with the others. Her mouth was a gape and she wanted to say she didn't know but all that came out was a slight sputter. Then it hit her: She saw the chains from all directions coming for her and she screamed.
Kirsty's voice went off like a siren in Tiffany's head. Tiffany collapsed to the floor with a pounding headache. She grabbed her long blonde hair in pain and winced her eyes.
A slight "Oh my God..." came from Kirsty's mouth as she was backing away into the wall behind her. As soon as she came into contact with the wall she felt horrendous things crawling on her skin. It was all too much to even be there.
She cringed in terror, paniced to get out she threw her back up against the wall harder and hit the back of her head. Her eyes rolled back and she began to feel like she was drowning in her own sweat. She stumbled her way around the corner and out the door.
The other girls were all down on the floor, crowded around Tiffany trying to help her up. Karen looked up at Kirsty stumbling out the front door and looked back down at Tiffany to see her watching the same scene. The other girls were all holding on to her, to try and help her to feet but Tiffany broke free and ran outside after Kirsty. The other girls stood there in confusion and couldn't understand a bit of it.
Tiffany ran down the road after Kirsty until she couldn't keep up and yelled her name. Kirsty stopped, almost passing out but Tiffany grabbed her arm before she could shut her eyes.
"What is going on? I thought you were okay." Tiffany was so worried and so unused to talking to Kirsty about anything. Tiffany being young in her mind had the little girl raging inside of her and as much as she wanted to cry, she couldn't.
Kirsty was trying to get a hold of herself, but could barely breathe from the overwhelming stress.
"This is too much. I can't handle it." Kirsty's dark eyes whelled up.
"Just come back." Tiffany pleaded with her small voice. She pulled on Kirsty's arm hoping to move her. Nothing.
"I can't stop thinking about it. I wanted to forget it all... and now I can't." Tiffany watched the tears pour down Kirsty's face. She didn't know what to do. She looked over her shoulder for a second to see the other girls out by the street, watching. She was afraid to ask Kirsty what was really happening in her mind; she knew some of it already.
"The nightmare?" Tiffany was more worried now. She knew they were looking and spekulating. She couldn't lose her home, but she didn't want to lose the friend who saved her life, either. "Come back with me?" Tiffany's voice cracked.
Kirsty shut her eyes tight. She was fed up with being surrounded by everything all at once. If anything were to happen, it wouldn't be any worse than what had happened before. She took Tiffany's hand and opened her eyes.
"Let's go back." Kirsty's voice was defeated. Tiffany didn't know any better and led her back down the sidewalk. The other girls bickered about what happened following the two into the house.
Inside, Kirsty sat out from the group and watched. She felt odd and outcast. Her entire night was becoming a big let down. She watched Tiffany with the other girls, sitting in a circle, hand in hand and murmoring to each other. The only thought in Kirsty's mind was "how could Tiffany get involved with something like this?". It was then she realized, Tiffany had been pulled into things before. Kirsty felt there was a reason for her to be there now. She was going to have to save Tiffany again.
Kirsty leaned back against kitchen counter looking into the dark living room. Her elbow bumped a bag of potato chips behind her. She shoved on it hard, crushing it, not noticing - she had become so voyeristic within their seance. She was almost a part of it. It was enough involvement to conjur the spirits of her past.
She heard a whirling sound in house suddenly. There was a red mist gathering in the air over the group of girls. Kirsty snapped from her trance. The mist was transforming into a kind of tornado. It had a dust like feel and was getting heavy, gaining gravity towards the girls. Kirsty looked around franticly. She had to do something but she didn't know what. The red mist was approaching towards them fast. Kirsty crinched and leaped forward on Tiffany.
Tiffany screamed with Kirsty's arms around her. They both looked up into the mist to see a familar face. Kirsty couldn't believe it. There was she was; Julia, looking down on her with a wicked smile. Kirsty groaned in anger and began dragging Tiffany away from the circle as fast as she could.
"We have to get out of here!" Kirsty rushed Tiffany to her feet as Julia's ghost was taking form. As they were running out the front door, Kirsty looked over her shoulder to see Julia sucking the skin from one of the girls. "Oh my god.." Kirsty winced as they stumbled out the door. They slammed it shut and ran across the street.
Inside, Julia was taking form. The skin was unraveling from the girls in the seance, like yarn unwinding from a ball. The flesh twirled around and slapped fresh onto Julia's bones. The blood sucked back into her pores. Julia stood there in the middle of what was once the other girls at the party. Now they were piles of collapsed bone corpses. Julia looked around the old house and grinned.
"Sure is good to be back home." She walked to the attic to get some clothes.
