Jack Bauer jerked his head up from the stove at the sound of the knock on his door. Turning off the burner, he turned on a heel and went to greet his guest.
Exactly on time, he thought to himself, just like you've always been.
He opened the door.
"Hey, Jordan," he said with a small smile, stepping back to let the other man into the house. "Come on in. I'm just finishing dinner."
Jordan Spencer smirked a little as he closed the door behind himself, handing Jack the bottle of red wine that he had brought with him. He always felt stupid if he was coming to someone's house for dinner and not bringing something. Beyond that, he had known Jack for years and the other man was getting kind of predictable in his old age. Not that he'd tell Jack that, because he was older than Bauer.
Instead, he just said, "Where's Kim?"
"She's upstairs changing. She just got home from work a little while ago." Jack took the bottle with them as they walked back into the kitchen, where he set it on the counter. "I'm glad you could make it, Jordan. Shame Mandy couldn't be here."
"She hates Atlanta, if that's any consolation." Jordan chuckled. "She sends her love."
"Tell her I said hello, next time she calls." Jack nodded slightly, before he looked over at one of his oldest friends and his second-in-command. They rarely saw each other outside of work anymore; Jack hardly saw anyone he worked with outside of work. It hadn't been company picnics all the time, but years ago there would be the occasional lunch or dinner date. Now, he kept his distance. Things had changed.
Not that any CTU agents had it easy when it came to socializing. They were all cognizant of the weight that their job put on them; it felt like another couple tons of the world they carried on their shoulders every day. Even the most light-hearted of them, like Jamey Farrell, couldn't shake that feeling. It took a lot out of a young agent.
And it left old war horses like Jack Bauer and Jordan Spencer standing in a room together, wondering what to say to each other.
"Things have changed, haven't they, Jordan?" Jack said after a moment.
Jordan nodded. "Yeah, Jack," he admitted, exhaling. "I can't even see where we used to be from where I'm standing."
"Yeah," Bauer agreed. "I can't either."
But then his eyes flicked past Jordan, to his daughter coming down the stairs. And Jordan watched his boss's eyes light up, and the honest smile that played on his lips. No matter how much weight there was on their shoulders, that was how they knew they were still alive.
