TOP TEN FAVORITE WESTERN MOVIES
1. "Stagecoach" (1939) - John Wayne and Claire Trevor became stars in John Ford's adaptation of Ernest Haycox's short story about a group of strangers riding on a stagecoach through dangerous Apache territory.
2. "Support Your Local Sheriff" (1969) - James Garner starred in this hilarious tale about a sharpshooter who cleans up a lawless mining town. Joan Hackett and Jack Elam co-starred.
3. "Escape From Fort Bravo" (1953) - John Sturges directed this exciting Civil War tale about a ruthless Union officer forced to track down escaped Confederate prisoners-of-war in Apache territory. William Holden, Eleanor Parker and John Forsythe starred.
4. "Maverick" (1994) - Mel Gibson, Jodie Foster and James Garner starred in this hilarious adaptation of the popular television Western from the late 1950s and early 60s. Richard Donner directed.
5. "The Shadow Riders" (1982) - Tom Selleck, Sam Elliot, Katherine Ross, Jeff Osterhage and Ben Johnson starred in this entertaining adaptation of Louis L'Amour novel about the Traven brothers who discover that members of their family have been kidnapped by raiders at the end of the Civil War.
6. "Tombstone" (1993) - Kurt Russell and Val Kilmer starred in this excellent version of the Earp brothers and the infamous O.K. Corral gunfight. George P. Cosmatos directed.
7. "True Grit" (2010) - The Coen Brothers directed this first-rate adaptation of Charles Portis' novel about a U.S. marshal helping a young girl search for her father's killer. Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon, Josh Brolin and Hailee Steinfeld starred.
8. "Whispering Smith" (1948) - Alan Ladd and Robert Preston co-starred in this tale about a railroad detective assigned to stop a gang of train robbers and is dismayed to learn that an old friend has become part of the gang. Directed by Leslie Fenton, the movie co-starred Brenda Marshall.
9. "The Big Country" (1958) - William Wyler directed this adaptation of Donald Hamilton's novel about a Baltimore captain drawn into a range war between two ranchers. Gregory Peck, Jean Simmons, Carroll Baker, Charlton Heston and Oscar winner Burl Ives starred.
10. "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" (1966) - Sergio Leone directed this epic tale about three men in search for Confederate gold in Civil War torn New Mexico. Clint Eastwood, Eli Wallach and Lee Van Cleef starred.
