Can I just say that I love you? I've been thinking along the same lines for a while now.
The idea of savior really bugs me now. Emma was the savior of Regina's curse. As you pointed out the whole thing was arranged by Rumpel. Her magic doesn't mean she's destine to be the savior of all forever. Her younger brother being born with the same light magic which proves that curse or no she would have the same magic born of true love. I feel like Emma isn't paying attention to anything going around her. She labeled herself the savior and as much as she hates it she cannot look away from it. Pan called her out on being the savior of Regina's curse alone. That her title is meaningless outside of Regina’s curse but that didn’t stick in her head. If she's read Henry's book then she'll know how much Rumpel messed with world to ensure his curse would work out so he could find his son. Emma was just a pawn in this that he moved with easy. He did to her in SB too.
Why does Emma embrace the Savior title when she doesn't like it or the responsibly of it? I can think of a few reasons. Henry hero worshiped her from the get go as the savior. We saw via the flashback pre season one he was upset with her before he decided she was savior. She loves that feeling. The downside is Henry put her on a pedestal which pretty hard to live up to. She's not human being she's the savior. Any mistake is overlooked or forgiven in his eyes as part of the hero's journey. What happens if she's not the savior anymore but just Emma - woman, a human being, a normal person? Would her mistakes be so easily over looked by her beloved son? Would he look up to as much? Emma's biggest fear is Henry's rejection and anger over being given up for adoption. She is unable to forgive her parents and holds a lot of anger towards them inside and fears Henry could do the same. If she's not the savior, the hero, but just woman then she opens herself up to risking Henry's negative feelings. Henry and Emma haven't really been on even ground due to way he hero worships her and then even after he forgot she was savior he had 11 years of fake only happy memories of her. 11 years of happy memories of Emma being a great mom with problem free life. That is important because again it's not real relationship between Emma and Henry as two human beings on even ground. Henry came out of those memories super well adjusted to the fact that his father was dead beat (the limited info they both had about Neal with fake memories) and he had cool open relationship with Emma. You can’t tell me only having good memories of relationship does not tip the balance of the relationship. Yes, they have one year of real memories of a normal up & down life, but it’s build on foundation of lies. Emma was despire not to lose that problem free relationship with Henry which why she’d rather have him without his real memories. In that perfect set up thanks to the fake memories she never has to deal with hard feelings about adoption because she raised him, she doesn’t have to share his love with anyone, he only remembers her as great if not perfect mom growing up. Suddenly thanks to fake memories Emma can cook where before she could make ceral and pop tarts. The season one - three:A relationship was uneven and the season three:B is uneven. I can only hope it somehow leads to them ending up on equal ground as mother and son - two human beings not hero and son or fake memories.
Another reasons Emma may cling to the savior title is she grew up alone feeling like she was nothing special. Now she's got this 'specialness' thus upon her, it makes her long lost son respect her, it makes the town folk respect her more than if she was just the sheriff. And her parents cling to it too. Snow is much like Henry in the sense that she hero worships Emma as savior for breaking the curse. She unlike Henry sees Emma more as person then savior. I think Snow is trying to find ways to tell Emma how amazing she thinks she is and saying 'you the savior. you saved everyone! You're so special' is easy way to do it. Just look at the way Snow acted in Neverland when she tried to get Emma to admit to being the savior thinking that was key to unlocking the map.
